Wanting to Upgrade from My Sony Xperia Z

I don't want to go any larger than 5" screen and I also want the device to be slim.. Under 8.0mm.

I also don't want to spend anymore than $500.

Now the galaxy a5 is a great phone, apart from the 1280x720 screen and 294ppi resolution….

Galaxy s5 and z3 compact are more than 8.0mm…

So I'm at a loss as to an upgrade to meet my criteria without actually downgrading some features, which kind of defeats the purpose to begin with.

Lastly I want to stick with mainstream brands

so you dont like the s5 cause it's 0.1mm bigger then 8.0mm?
    someones very picky today

also the A5 is a massive downgrade not even talking about the bad screen.

No such thing as far as i know unless you can find an iphone 6 or Galaxy s6 for $500 lol

I just checked all flagships from this and last year

    • I know its being picky, but my xperia z is 7.9mm and I find it to bulky, so what ever I upgrade to needs to be thinner than what I have now.. Does the s5 curve off at the ends like the s4?

        google images mate.

your other choice is a z3 for about $80 more then your budget but it's 5.2" but it's 7.3mm

id say the 0.1mm and 0.1" larger screen for a cheaper price point is worth it.

Cause there is nothing that fits what your after well nothing id call an upgrade under $500 that is.

        • Thanks for the reply, I'd be willing to spend more but the 5" screen is really as large as I'd like to go, I already find it difficult one hand typing on my current handset… I can't believe there isn't any other options… Galaxy s4 fits the bill, but its hardly an upgrade from what I already have….

        Seriously?

Not sure of your spacial skills, but if the Sony is too "bulky" for you, it is not because of the 7.9mm dimension!

Perhaps you should take off the screen protector film?

        0.1mm … lol

A thinner phone will make it harder to grip!

        TLDR: Man up!

        • It's more so the 5" screen size I was referring to regarding one handed typing and so on, I have small hands….
Secondly I know it's only a 0.1mm difference so it might be an option, but personally I would have liked a thinner phone..

  • I asked this a while ago…

Here is a phone size comparison tool

    http://www.phonearena.com/phones/size#/phones/size/Sony-Xper…

    I have pre-selected three phones — the Xperia Z2, Z1, and the LG G2.

Methinks you are upgrading probably a bit too early… the newer phones will not really be much of an upgrade from your existing mobile. I mean while we have made a few improvements with CPU to support 64-bit, all the other 'upgrades' are very minor and none have really evolved in the last 2 years.

You'd have to spend top dollar (more than $500) to get a very recent flagship device and even then IMO it doesn't pay to be an early adopter of Android phones.

    • I'd second that - I have the Z, and although some phones interest me, the only "upgrade" would be to USB3, a higher res screen [ just in case I want to output to a 60" 4K TV without having to see a pixel] and more memory and a speedier processor/GPU to save the occasional 2 second pause. The only ones that would be a recognisable jump to my ancient eyes would be an S6 or a G3/G4. They are bigger.
The only reasons I can see for moving on from the Z aside from a "new phone" feeling would be USB3 and Band 28 4G if your provider is using it.

The end of August and the end of January seem to be the " cleared as much as we can at premium and "sales", bring on the new and dump the old" periods. September to get the buzz starting for yuletide, and January to keep the wheels ticking over as everyone takes stock of the bacchanalia loot and the bills for it.

I agree. It amazes me for a phone which now has 3 more successors it still holds up spec wise with most current models..

        • I still have a Z, I like how it is smaller than the newer Z models. It is thinner and the bezels are smaller.
That said my sons Z3 felt nicer in the hand and battery life was great. He did break it by it being bent accidentally.
He now has a LG G3, I really nice phone very thin on the sides but thicker in the middle. But battery is much worse.G3 is only just bigger than the Z but has a much bigger screen.

  • Ending up going with galaxy S5.
Very happy with my purchase, sits nice in my hand, even with the 5.1" screen, very light, doesn't feel 8.0mm.

    • Did you sell your xperia Z?
