Steam Credit 2-5% Less than Exchange Rate (Further Saving Vs. PayPal) @ EB Games

660

A slightly cheaper way to buy games on Steam, especially useful during the current sale :)

So basically the deal is that while EB Games are charging more AUD than the USD amount for steam credit, they haven't caught up with the tanking exchange rate (sob). This means buying steam credit here is cheaper than using Paypal or your credit card's exchange rate.

It's not a huge saving; but if you're going to use the credit then it's a good deal. My guess is the price will be adjusted up soon enough.

Steam Credit Price Direct conversion (Google) Paypal Price
20 USD 25 AUD 25.78 AUD (save 3%) 26.72 AUD (save 6.4%)
50 USD 63 AUD 64.54 AUD (save 2.3%) 66.80 AUD (save 5.6%)
100 USD 122 AUD 129.07 AUD (save 5.4%) 133.60 AUD (save 8.6%)

I love all of these little ways of manipulating the system to our benefit. Seeling out coupons, using cashback services, finding the cheapest currency to pay with online, and so on.

Also, remember you can buy EB Gift Cards at Woolies. So further savings if you purchased the vouchers from GroupOn.

  • I've noticed that ebgames will always sell steam currency for better than the current exchange rates, regardless of the rate at which the exchange rate declines. So even during times of relatively stable exchange rates, buying from EB is the better option.

"buying from EB is the better option"

Probably the first time I've ever heard that…

    I HATE THIS AUD-USD EXCHANGE

    • +5

yep, go back 5 years ago when it was a steady $1.00

      • It wasn't a steady 1:1 fx in 2010

  • Very neat, if I didn't already have $80 credit left over from DOTA mice I'd be all over this :P

    • You haven't yet spent it all in the steam Summer sale?

      • Nope, been very underwhelmed by the current sales, did pick up and have enjoyed Cities: Skylines tho

        • I purchased nothing last summer sale, so perhaps I'm catching up this one!

  • PayPal used to have the option to let your credit card company handle the currency conversion. I haven't looked thoroughly but am I right in saying this is no longer an option?

    • I'm pretty sure you can still, I did so a few months ago. I just learned then that my card's exchange rate after fees was even worse than PayPal, so I didn't do that again. That's also why I didn't include their rates in this post.

You can still do it. I have my 28 degrees card for foreign currency purchases and my other card for aud purchases.

Same here. No dramas so far

FYI guys — steam has recently made it impossible for a game to drop any cards in the first 2 hours of gameplay. This is mostly to prevent people from abusing the new refund policy.

    • Thanks for letting us know. Although I did harvest a bunch of cards this week…. All with a set timer of 32 minutes a card.
I know you can't sell cards obtained under certain conditions for a week.

    • I initially assumed it was because of participation in the Monster game, since if you run multiple games at once the card drop rate decreases. Now I know it is the <2hour refund policy.

I am still in love with IdleMaster. It makes my life easier, which is what technology should be doing.

  • Dumb question, so you can use the paypal rate on Steam?

    • Yes, you can add wallet funds to your steam account and pay with PayPal. You can also just directly purchase any game with any payment method you like, including PayPal.

oh okay, misunderstand your table at first

        • That's quite understandable, it took me a while to figure out how to setup the table and I'm still not sure if it's as clear as it could be…

  • A $20 USD giftcard is $26AUD not $25AUD.

I was in EB yesterday in Doncaster and they were $25.
May have changed overnight as they do fluctuate a bit.

Thanks op!. Can confirm for 50 usd i paid 63 aud at melbourne central. With mebank i also got another 5% paywave :)

  • Bought one at the start of the sale. Didn't even think to post it as a deal! I've ocassionally checked the value of EB steam cards and this is about the best they've been for a while.

  • but then, put in account if travelling…
I just buy off paypal as whenever I go out, i eat.. :(
