Apple TV 3rd gen setup problem

I just purchased a new Apple TV and have come across a few issues, Is there a way to set up the device with out having a apple device? Because the Apple TV turns off by itself after awhile of non use and cannot be turned back on without a ipad or iPhone etc, why is this? Cheers.

That shouldn't be the case. You should be able to set it up perfectly fine with just the included remote.

If you've already set it up, it will go to sleep after a period of non-use. You can change the time for that in the settings. Else it should wake up with the press of the remote buttons or if it doesn't, turning on and off the power should bring it back on.

If you've tried all of that, then most probably you have a dud apple TV.

(Also make sure your telly doesn't have sleep mode on or something.)

  • Sometimes while watching it just freezes and it does not respond using the remote, but pressing AirPlay it turns it back on.

I heard that I have to change the settings so it does not require an apple device?

  • Remote should always wake it up if it is set to sleep after being left idle. You should provide a bit more info on your setup. Sounds like you are streaming from an another device?

  • Yeh that's weird, I didn't connect mine to an apple device for at least a year and it worked fine that whole time.

What are you watching when it does this (ie. streaming from airplay device or something else eg. using a program like air parrot or beamer)?
Is there some power save option on your TV that isn't detecting the HDMI input and so turning off?

If all else fails a full restart/restore of the apple tv isn't a bad option.

  • Just changed to sleep to never" and now it does notsleep but my Apple TV won't won't connect to my wifi modem, it detects it but cannot connect, the message on my TV says can't connect to Internet, my iPhone is connect to my wifi and works on the Apple TV setting for network, it finds the network and seems to connect but on the main page on the Apple TV it says not connected. at times when I select my network sometimes it asks for the password, if it's been connected recently why would it sometimes ask for it?

Edit and now it's connected back for some unknown reason, but netflicks won't load and iTunes loads slowly, my iPhone is all good with speeds.

  • What modem/router do you have?

I had an old Billion model that totally stuffed my Apple TV up for months and months. Apple phone support couldn't sort it out no matter what. They gave me a replacement and eventually gave up and just gave me a $150 voucher and an apology.

Nek minnit I replace my 10 year old modem/router with a 5 year old router and the Apple TV works perfectly. Oops.

Anyway, so could it be your router/modem?

  • My modem is actually new only had it for a year, haven't had any problems with any connect wifi devices, it's funny my Apple TV won't see the wifi modem at times when trying to search in the setting, could it be the Apple TV is faulty?

    • Very unlikely to be a fault with ATV if it does connect. Sounds like you have something funky going on with your wireless network.

  • If it's under warranty the phone support is awesome. Just make sure you do an update / restore before calling because that's the first thing they'll ask you to do.
