Car Wreckers Experiences

Would like to get your experiences on going to wreckers. I'm based in Sydney.

How does it usually work?

How do they price the parts and do they take it out for you or do you bring in your own equipment and take it yourself?

Also any notable wreckers that are good to deal with an ones to stay away from? I'm in bankstown area. Specifically after places that deal with Honda integra.

Thanks everyone.

  • Depends on the place.

pick and pay less are obviously a you pick it and then pay so tools are a must.

all depends on the car model you are after, there are 2 good joints in Bankstown for commodores but that's all they do and there are many that do just specific brands.

I'd get onto yellow pages and hunt around.

  • Try this: http://partsonline.com.au/

I needed a new side mirror for a Mazda (non-powered). I got about 10 replies in less than 36 hours and the prices were very good with postage. In the end I got it for $50 delivered - not even worth my time to drive to the wreckers and remove it myself from the vehicle to be honest.

Try ebay too - some of the wreckers sell their parts on there with photos.

I've only dealt with the ones in melbourne, but so far the general formula has been
-check online to see if they have the right model first if possible
-Try and figure out where to park. Some places have the 'new arrivals' next to the customer parking. Quite dangerous for me, because my car is in worse condition than a lot of the wrecks
-go inside through the entrance. Pay the $2 fee. Sign whatever forms you need to sign. One place actually wanted to take a full scan of my drivers license
-Look up the price of the part. It either has a large board with the prices, same for all cars, or a computer system where you can search specific models
-Find the location of the wreck your after. Some give you a printed map to the location of the car your after, others just organize by manufacturers, and you have to weave through until you find it
-Pick the car with the best looking part. Undo it and take it to the exit. Present it the guy, pay what it costs. If your not sure it works, or want to play it safe, pay the extra for returnability. I generally don't unless its electronic or over $100.
    -get your receipt and leave

    note
For many parts, you have to buy them in a set, ie you cant just buy the speedo, you have to buy the whole dashboard display, that sort of thing.
Inside the cars can be very smelly

    • pick a part, pick a part, pick a part , pick a part, so you pick the car for the part you need.

    Penrith Auto Parts Plus

Had the best price around for the item I was after. They made certain that the item was the correct one with no fuss.
Ordered mid-day and delivered for $20 @ 8am next day.
Will be my first stop next time.

  • I usually find it easier to go to a make or country specific wrecker. i.e., a Honda wrecker.

They will usually have the part on the shelf or will take it off for you. Probably a little more expensive than the remove-yourself wreckers like u-pull-it etc, but much less hassle.

But an increasingly popular choice now, is to find a 'Honda buy and sell' group on Facebook, usually MUCH cheaper then wreckers and theres tonnes of groups around!

  • pricing varies. best to ring around and ask.

a few months ago I needed a taillight for a 1999 magna. various places were charging $80 - $125. found a place that charged $45 delivered.

  • Hi, you may look at Cash for cars penrith. They often have Integra's. Just give them a call before going there, as they may not have it there. They are based in Penrith area. Thanks
