Price match/beat at Officeworks

Officeworks proudly advertises that they will better by 5% the price of an identical item that is in stock elsewhere.

On line they have a High Sierra Product Code: AIHS5462BK for $99.

The exact same item is at Bagworld for $59.40 delivered.

I went to Officeworks Guildford to purchase this item and they refused to honour the "better by 5%" on the grounds that the BagWorld product code was HS5462.

I do not know anyone who has had a successful price match at Officeworks - why is this so?

  • Did you take it up with a manager or head office?

    • The guy at the Officeworks store was the manager

      • +2

        Next step head office

        • You're actually best going to another store rather than head office.
But if you are feeling like making somebody's world burn — go leave some feedback in store.

But let's be honest, they haven't exactly pulled a Hitler here. This was all probably a result of a lazy worker being a lazy worker. Best to get your item from another store, leave feedback and move on.

The proposed pricematch meets all of their criteria as noted on their website.

The Bagworld Bag has a product code of H5462 as opposed to AIHS5462BK on the Officeworks website.

AI is a qualifying product code officeworks uses to seperate products into product categories.
HS5462 is the product's identifying code for this particular line of bag.
BK is the colour of the bag.

The product is identical (right down to the colour) and the price match should not have been declined. I'd go back in again today armed with this knowledge and a printout of their price-beat criteria.

    • thank you - will go to another officeworks on the way home armed with that information

I've had two successful price matches on a micro usb and tablet, though they were about two years back. But I only price matched because another ozbargainer successfully did it already which gave me the confidence to do it! But OW weren't troublesome about it at all.

Did you ever just consider supporting Bagworld for offering the better price & just buy off them in the first place, rather than go through all of the hassle of fighting Orificeworks just to save $2.97???

I don't know about you, but my time is worth more to me than that!

    • Rather than wait 2 days for a delivery from Bagworld I thought getting one from OW would save me a day or two.

      • +1

How's that working out for you?

        • +1

not too well - forget the 5% but OW would not even match the BagWorld price

        • +2

@Islund: Don't worry, we've all had exactly the same experience with OW…that's why so many of us are quite jaded with regard to their BS price beat/match policy! ;)

I once went with my friend to price match a HP tablet that is advertised $139 on OW but is selling online at $100 on HP store. We got it price beaten and got it for around $87. We only found later that the one HP selling was Gen 1 whereas the one at OW was Gen2. The sales guy didn't have a clue.

Basically it all depends on the sales person and the store manager.

I was refused a price match by the store manager at an Officeworks store. Went back later that day and the employee at the counter just put it through. I'm guessing it comes down to the managers wanting to make max profit for their stores, while the lower level employees don't care as much.

I would still complain through.. what's the point of offering the 5% price beat if it is almost impossible to redeem it?

Every time you price matche at Officeworks, Officeworks has a little giggle at your expense. Same with every other retailer that offers a price match policy.

Yes, absolutely this. Because everytime I processed a price match in my three years at Officeworks, the whole team got into it!

I remember this one time, a customer came in to the shop and was after a Toshiba Satellite 13 inch laptop. We had it priced at $1140 and he bought in an ad from Harvey Norman showing it for $1100. I could instantly feel my stomach turn — butterflies fluttered rampantly and I felt elated. I stifled a stutter and tried to control my grin as I told him "N-no problems sir. I will just get my manager to approve the price change through our Point of Sale sy…sy…system."

He handed me the printed advertisement, and I almost sprinted into the receiving bay — my face bright pink. My shoulders began heaving with laughter — a price matching customer! Again! My belly laugh echoed through the dusty and dank receiving bay, my nearby employee-comrades heads shooting up — their eyes wide with anticipation. Two of the receiving bay managers sprinted over, standing over me as I lay on the ground with tears in my eyes. One of them plucked the ad from my hands and their look of excitement was confirmed — it was another price match. She spluttered and began screaming in a jovial manner, her amused cries mimicing that of a hyena on the great plains. "THAT FOOL! TO COME IN HERE AND PRICEMATCH!" she bellowed.

The laughter spread amongst the employees and there was great joy and satisfaction for the remainder of the day. I'll always rememeber that the best part of it all is that the customer had no idea we were laughing at him.

      • I'd do that job for free :)

  • Just got the additional 5% discount on an Apple Macbook Pro. The lady online didn't quibble just confirmed the DS had the same model for 10% cheaper, so we saved ourselves an additional $90+ off the DS price. (She did check it was the same model number.) The "Checkout" did a piece on the fact that Officeworks sometimes has their own "models" of certain items to avoid having to price match. If it is worth your while then go through the effort, if it is only a small amount different I would walk away grumbling.

  • I got FitBits price matched to an online store. No issues. In and out in less than 5 mins. The only thing they said was, "wow, that's a huge discount" as the discount of RRP was almost 25% and it wasn't very long after release.

  • Go at a busy time (like a Saturday morning), and just get a (preferably young) employee on the front desk to do it. I did this last week and she actually asked me the price (I could have said anything!), and who I was price matching. No problemo.

  • Office works has a similar practice to Bunnings with their price match guarantee..

    good read..
    http://thenewdaily.com.au/news/2015/05/31/bunnings-prices-de…

    • Something similar was on the ABC's "The Checkout"

    • I once saw a lady trying to get a price match at Bunnings, telling them she could get the item at $X elsewhere, only to be told, "Well off you go then."

  • I price matched a MS keyboard and mouse combo last year when there was that MS cash back thing going on, and the guy that processed my price match was uncertain about the product codes and all until I said others had done it. Upon hearing that, he went on OzBargain and saw it was indeed the same product from the comments. Sadly he declined to tell me his username, but he did say he was an avid OzBargainer.

  • Harvery Norman was once selling Wifi extender for $19 however only stock was available in Lismore. OW was selling it for $49 but the staff at Hunter St Sydney branch did it for $18 after checking stock with HN.

    • All the OW city stores are great. Fantastic for price matching and general assistance from their staff.

  • I've honestly had no problem with my local Officeworks (Glen Waverley)

The manager of the store was even nice enough to go out of the way to move stock from a different store, hold it for 2 days for me and still honour the price beat even after the original promotion was done.

This was for an iPad Mini 2.

  • After all of that I went to David Jones on the way home - they matched the BagWorld price and I had the bag without the wait.

  • Heres my experience with Officeworks Chatswood.
Went in to get a laptop for $398. Just when I went to purchase, noticed that JB had the same model with 15% off.
Showed the staff the webpage, he flat out refused to price match.
Showed me the policy where price match is only on 'normal priced' items not sales or clearance items.
So took the business to JB.
So much for Officeworks price match.

    • Sales items aren't excluded.

"What items are excluded from the LPG?

Non identical products and services (inclusive of non identical warranties)
Package deals i.e. printer and computer bundles
      Cash back and coupon offers
      Resellers
      Customer special orders
      Contract Pricing
      Competitor clearance products

Officeworks reserves the right to limit the quantity of products available for price-matching at its discretion. The Lowest Price Guarantee does not extend to resellers."

The only Officeworks I've been denied the LPG is the one at Five Dock. They're the biggest waste of time. I've tried a few times over the years but never even got one price beat there. It feels like they've been instructed to deny you from the onset.

  • Anyone managed to get Officeworks to price match on a iPhone SE 64gb? Selling at Mobiciti for $729. Would be trying at the Pitt st store.

    • I think that would work. I would…if Officeworks ever had anything other than the Space Grey in stock. I've been waiting for months because I have an expiring Officeworks card meant to go towards the damn phone :\
