Difference between Philips Airfryer & the "rest"

Hi all,

I'm sure we ozbargainers have a love for airfryer (judging from amount of deals posted). I'm sure many would agree Philips is the best brand out there. BUT…it's also the most expensive brand out there. So the question is, is it worth the extra money?

For example, you got this http://www.oo.com.au/Rank-Arena-Air-Fryer-LCD-Dis_P255326.cf… which has been raved about these last few days. Why the big difference in price? i.e original RRP of $119 for RA compared to Philips HD9240 around $350. Surely there must be some compromise? It can't possibly cook as good as Philips can it? Has anyone owned a Philips & other cheaper ones & able to judge the difference between the two?

Hope to get some feedbacks & technical insights into airfryers in regards to their differences. Cheers!

  • My understanding is that Phillips invented the technology while other companies are now copying it.

I don't own either brand but I see this new gadget as the same as the George Forman grill and Microwave ovens.

Technically they operate on the same principle and can give the same result on other companies versions.

Price wars will happen with new items so we all get buying power.

Set the temp of the Fryer then set the timer and that's it. You don't need "modes" and for it to play mp3s and surf the web on it ;)

I'm looking to get any brand so long as the design looks like it will sustain use or abuse in my case.

      • I remember my grand parents having that type of vertical grill when I was a teenager (I am now 50)

  • I have the Tefal which is almost zero cleaning and maintenance. Never used a Philips, but I have a few friends who own them and the basket is a bitch to clean. Most have stopped using their air fryer completely because of the metal basket.

Apparently one guy had salmon skin stuck to it and spent the next 2 hours cleaning it and swore never to do it again LOL..

    • Interesting when you mention the metal basket, had the same thought too…

If the metal is not preheated, surely food will stuck onto it…but then again the metal mesh might give better frying result yes?

      • Never had a problem with food being cooked unevenly, although again I've not had first hand experience with a mesh basket one to do a fair comparison.

For the amount of headaches I've heard from friends, I'm happy sticking to the very low maintenance Tefal fryer.

    • Many Tefal's review online not so good though…what's your thought?

      • Yes they apparently break and stop working, but at $149ish, they're cheap to the point where I'm not worried if they break, Big W are pretty good with warranty and if I have to get another one then so be it.

We have the basic model Actifry for less than a year now and it has served us well so far, knock on wood!

  • Difference between Philips Airfryer & the "rest"

About $300 …we bought a cheaper one around $89 gets used every day, had it for three years.

  • My friend has a phillips while I have the kogan one and his seems to cook things quite a lot faster but then again it's about $200 more

  • I have the Rank arena one and it hasnt missed a beat. Now it has a permanent place on the counter. Great buy for ~60 bucks, you cant go wrong… Cant say the same for the phillips though. Doesnt matter who invented the tech, all that matters is how well the company finally makes it work and how well it is priced!

    • +1

Having the same thought, but wife is unfortunately quite keen on "proper" brand like Philips on our kitchen bench or she's not having it…She's quite particular with its aesthetic & perceived better quality material…

atm, I'm just gonna use the RA one in my office LOL
