Pros versus cons of getting a tradie to install oven appliance vs big name brand (Good Guys / 2nds World)

So I'm set on replacing a gas oven in my new home. Since it's gas and I don't have the qualifications to fiddle with potentially explosive stuff, I need someone handy to do it for me.

What would be the wisest choice:

Option A
Buy an oven from a big-box electronics store like TGG and pay them to deliver, install new and remove old oven

Option B
Pay a tradesperson or handyman to supply oven, delivery, install new and remove old oven

And in terms of say, post-sales customer service, would Option A be better in case I need to chase up for a warranty claim, or claim compensation for a shoddy installation for example?

  • I don't know about an oven but for an air-conditioner it is cheaper to buy from a store and pay a tradie to get it installed.
I asked a few installers and they all told me to just buy from a store as they cant buy any where near what the big stores sell for. The ones that did give prices to supply and install were $100's more expensive
This was to replace a faulty unit.

    • What about the logistics of it though?

If we pay for the item to be delivered to our home (I don't have a ute or truck), we may as well pay the extra to have it installed too?

And if I call a tradie, there's a call out fee (?) which is also an additional cost on top of having already paid for the delivery of said oven.

So…hmmm. Not sure what is best.

      • simply get quotes for both.

most tradies for the AirCon werent interested in supplying at all.

With delivery and everything , big store was still heaps cheaper.

But call around, doesnt hurt and isn't hard. Tell the Tradie you want supply fit and disposal of the old, and a price for fit and disposal and you will supply. and then get a price for a unit delivered from Good Guys and then compare.

      • Delivery is probably only 30-50ish. A drop in the ocean compared to tradies costs!

  • My experience has been positive with having the store installation service.. But for gas work, I don't know. I would like to see a license first - cause as you said, it's explosive stuff.

  • Is there any construction happening around your area?

If so, drop in to see a plumber and sparky. Grab their numbers and offer them a cold one at knock off.
They will then come into quote and hopefully tell you the truth on what they would do.

    Sparkies/ Plumbers… where r u?

  • If you look behind the oven, what type of gas outlet is it? Is it just a standard gas bayonet?

It's just a simple case of push, twist, pull. plugging in a power point in the dark is significantly harder.

    • Current oven is a hardwired electric one, and it's dead… not receiving any power because apparently the internal wiring (junction) in the walls are kaput and it would cost me a bomb to knock out the walls to access and fix the wiring.

So now I realized there's even more things I need to work out.

      • Fuel type I'm using. LPG or Natural… finding this out tomorrow morning

      • I'm using a gas stove and a gas water heater. My oven is now electric, but changing it to a gas one will mean I will have three gas appliances. So there will be more 'plumbing' work to do as there needs to be a new gas pipe fitted to the stove?

      • and then I need to work out what gas oven I need.

      blah.

      • ahh ok, a bit more advanced that just screwing it back in.

  • Bear in mind that gas ovens aren't as good as electric for cooking. Heat is much more even and precise in an electric. The only real benefit is quick heat up time and maybe lower running costs.
