How Do You Get over The Fact That You Have Paid Way Too Much for Something?

I paid way too much for a (old/Classic) car and I dont know why I did it and I don't think I will ever get over it… I'm quite a scrooge/frugal normally.
I get stressed just thinking about it, annoying thing is I don't really have room for it, but I'm in the process of building a shed/garage.

Now That I see what they are going for on Gumtree i'm at a big loss and I feel I've let my family down but my missus just tells me she doesn't care and I shouldn't worry so much.
My thought is that maybe i should get a second job and get the money back so it would worry me so much, get my mind off it but the wife said no you're not.

So, How Do You Get over The Fact That You Have Paid Way Too Much for Something?

not the end of the world, dont beat yourself up, just a mistake money isnt everything, listen to your misses and enjoy your time with her…

from personal experience, getting a second job to cover the cost wont help. You will just then be cross with yourself for effectively working the extra hours for 'nothing'. In the wise words of Elsa "let it go, let it go….."

    • Ironically, my brain doesn't let the song go…

The price never bothered me anyway~~

      • Know the feeling and it is now stuck in my brain. Help? Lol

Listen to the the missus, if you don't have to, don't get a second job. Take the time to enjoy the purchase, enjoy the time with the family and (again) enjoy the purchase. If you feel you paid too much for it, it's probably that this classic tweaked a few emotional strings (I'm assuming here), so why not embrace that aspect?

It is just money! Not a big deal. Just enjoy the car and relax. Happiness is way more important than money.

Stress less mate, from all the savings you've made from being frugal, you're still ahead, even after you believe you've paid too much.

As for paying more and regretting the decision, what about the fact you got to buy the car you always wanted. Not many can.

  • you should relax mate, its not the end of the world

Spend some time doing it up, sell it and make a profit.

  • Think about it this way, it's a classic/old car right, so hopefully in a few years you can sell it for higher price as it's more antique???

But yeah I know how you feel, I still beat myself up for not booking my tickets straight away last week and ended up getting another airlines. But just relax, it's just money and you can get it back sooner or later.

  • I'm sorry to hear that. Personally i'll try to forget it. It's just money after all.

  • Mate, just look at it this way, you can always earn your money back over time, you can't go back in time and say have time with the family or enjoy a little moment of happiness. Those are lost forever once you let it go..

  • You'll forget it in time. Just like you did all your previous mistakes. Sadness doesn't last forever. Neither does happiness either.

No such thing as spending too much on a classic car.

    • Amen to that. Exactly… So appreciate what you have. Focus on the positive not the past you can't change.

  • Everything is worth something to someone. You may have paid more than what other people would have paid, but that doesn't take away from how much it is worth to you.

It was obviously worth the amount you paid for it, otherwise you wouldn't have bought it! So, ignore what other people are paying for similar products, and enjoy what you've got!

Also; some people believe cars have an individual character. Your baby might just be one of a kind!

    Just enjoy it!

You don't know the condition of the other cars on gumtree. I've bought an classic car before for around 20 grand, the examples for sale around 10-15k would have needed seriously work/rust/age. The 20k car I bought was 90% rebuild and hasn't missed a beat since.

  • If its really an issue then sell it and your life will continue on as per usual, if a loss is incurred then so what at least the liability of having it is gone.

  • OP, was it an Aston Martin Lagonda?

      Haha I wish :)

  • Thanks Guys
Yer at least it wont loose to much value compare to newer cars that are just worth scrap when they are old.

  • Sometime a purchase is about more than money (i know sacrilege on OZB). Holidays are an expensive spend and in truth if you calculated on a financial basis only they are a waste of money, BUT, experience is invaluable, so forget the cost enjoy the car, and realise that every time you see it, think about it and drive it, you are getting a return.

    ENJOY :)

Now, how do i get over paying $50 more for my laptop the day before DSE puts it on sale!! :)

Didnt see it , but what car was it ?

  • go buy another one at a better price so the you can offset the cost of the more expensive one,

might make you feel better, you'll have 2 of what you want at a better price.

  • How much money are we talking about?

You win some, you lose some. If you keep stressing over this and letting it affect your work and family, you're going to lose more.

    • About 3-4 grand too much :o so yes not huge $ in the grand scheme of life.

I know some people spend more at the casino….

      • if it helps, i bought a motorbike second hand for $5k…. and then 4 hours later the bike blew up and i had to spend $4k fixing it… i could have bought a new one for less.
i was pissed but time helped me get over it! these things happen.

Rest assured that you are saving money through your Ozbargain skills and will eventually break even through constant savings.

We have big second hand shopping skills as well :)

  • So you paid more than you wanted for it. Can you try selling it?

I did something similar. I bought a 'classic' car and felt somewhat guilty with the costs involved in servicing it. I don't regret the purchase, though. Enjoy the moment and the car. You bought the car for the experience. There is no monetary value on that. I researched my car for over 6 months before purchasing. Yes, I could have found many cheaper, but experience tells me that there is a reason they are cheaper. Also, the very mention of gum tree and car in the same sentence makes me think of some dude in tracky dacks with his butt crack showing trying to replace the head gasket with one from a 'similar' model so he can get it on the road and sell it, 'mate'. Don't worry. I am sure you made the right choice at the right time. Enjoy that car, because if you don't, someone else will. Don't get a second job, just put away a few hundred a month to buy your wife a lovely gift.

  • Let it go. Sell it. Cut your losses and forget it. Make sure not to make the same mistake again. Good luck.

  • I often have the same issue - getting really upset and annoyed at myself for paying too much (eg if I see a bargain pop up for the same item a few days later :p).

However, I think we can both just try to be kinder to ourselves. We made the choice that felt right at the time - and that's the best we could have done! :)

Try to accept it, remember you did your best at the time, and let it pass.

  • just put it back up for sale for what u paid for it

might take a year or two to sell but you may get your money back, or close to it
