The auto renew function is activated automatically … so when you want the domain for only 1 year make sure your turn it off :-)

Yes you can, All you need to do is turn off auto renewal which is turned on automatically and ignore away when you receive the expiry notices.

Some additional information.
Minds + Machines, Is the official registry for http://nic.work/ and http://nic.casa/ so any domain names registered are registered directly with the operator of the name space's in question.
Auto renew is turned on by default on all domain names registered so if you wish to let them expire after the first year you will want to turn it off.
You will be able to transfer your domain name out after the first 60 days has elapsed to another registrar of your choice. The 60 days is standard ICANN policy.
Domain name registration comes with the following extras URL forwarding, DNS Hosting which is great if you want to use an email service like Zoho Mail (free) and plus Tumblr or Blogger for a website (free) they also include Mozart for building a website as well.
No email forwarding included or WHOIS Privacy. WHOIS Privacy appears to be available for an extra charge $5 USD/yr per domain was unable to activate on any of my .casa or .work (thanks to twocsies above.)
