ebay - consequence of not paying for an item

hi

if we did not pay for an item (cos we bought it by mistake or whatever reason)

What would happen?

I know that ebay would issue you a strike..if matter is not resolved with the seller privately (ie. seller won't close the unpaid item case).

I have contacted the seller (explain my reason), but they are not responding..

So how many unpaid item strikes can you have per year?
Does it reset each year?

How many strikes can you have before whatever penalty happens? and what penalty occurs?

===

What should I do on this matter?

-Take the 1 strike hit
-Pay for the item, then give them a neg feedback and ask to return it?

If the buyer doesn't pay, you need to manually close the case in the Resolution Centre within 36 days after the listing ended. If you haven't closed the case on the 37th day after the listing ended,eBay automatically closes it and you don't receive afinal value fee credit. Also, an unpaid item won't be recorded on the buyer's account.

  • Unpaid items and and account limits

*Buyers who don't pay may have unpaid items recorded on their accounts.

*Unpaid items are separate from Feedback, and don't affect a user's Feedback score or Feedback Profile.

*Unpaid items will automatically be assigned to the buyer's account when the seller receives a final value fee credit.

If you have excessive unpaid items on your account, we may limit or end your ability to buy.

Buyers have the option of appealing an unpaid item if they believe it was undeserved.

      • they probably don't want that out in the public domain, if it's just 1 item, i'd just take the hit, but also let the seller know too, that way they can move on quick claiming their fees back etc

    Link to appeal: http://pages.ebay.com/help/buy/appeal-unpaid-item.html

Unfortunately I don't see 'change of mind' on the reasons list though.

Edit: You would be a total dick if you paid for an item just to neg them and ask for a refund. It's the weekend, give them time to respond.

      • If you have made that many attempts to contact them, I don't think they will bother with an unpaid item claim. Even if they did I'm sure eBay will see you made an attempt so I don't think you should worry about it. I've never even seen an unpaid mark against a seller in 6 years on eBay, I really don't think it's a big deal.

Sorry that's what I meant. I've never clicked in anybody's profile and seen something that says there has been an unpaid item, buyer or seller.

          @AngryAlfred:

It is an option when you are a seller.

You can limit people with 2 strikes from viewing your listing.

if you get a strike you can ask it to be taken off. I accidentally didn't pay for something and it was removed by eBay.

    • -2

how long does the strike stay on record.

      • It was immediately taken off. In my case there was a misunderstanding between the buyer and myself, but eBay didn't care, they didn't even require an explanation. That was a while ago it might have changed though.

Also don't pay for it and give a neg, it's not their fault you changed your mind or made a mistake. Try to work it out with the seller. Also ask on eBay community discussion they will be more helpful about the current eBay policies.

Already tried messaging them since 9/6.

I am pretty sure they are just ignoring it, so they can get me to pay it or I take a strike.

-Pay for the item, then give them a neg feedback and ask to return it?

Why will you give a negative feedback?

    • +14

Agreed, Why would you give the seller negative feedback because you don't want the item and bought it by mistake.

if we did not pay for an item…What would happen?

You will wake up one day in an empty room, chained to some vicious steampunk torture device, and you will hear the seller say: Hello Tyler, I want to play a game.

    • haha
      good one.

which saw did u like best?

A deal is a deal, PAY UP !

  • +27

Why would you give the seller negative feedback? That's totally unfair.

You have wasted his time and possibly money; eBay charges him a fee for a completed sale so he has to go through the non-paying bidder process to get it back.

How much is the item? Can you still use it? You should consider if you can in fact honour the commitment you made. Otherwise, take the hit to your eBay reputation and don't threaten the seller.

I'd pay up and take the hit. It was your fault, not his. Threatening to leave negative feedback is juvenile. Man up.

    • -6

      no worries.

I never threaten them with any thing..

I just told them the reason but they are choosing not to respond.

I think that is probably best option.

Did you really expect people to condone you purchasing a product and then giving the seller a negative feedback because you changed your mind?

        • +4

Doesn't matter what reason you have, unless seller has been messing you around, not posting item for weeks, no stock etc if the you the buyer cancels, it's change of mind.

This post highlights the problems that selling stuff via ebay has.

It also highlights the poor attitude some buyers have

-Pay for the item, then give them a neg feedback and ask to return it?

  • +31

For sellers out there, don't be afraid to use the unpaid strike, it's there for a reason. I know someone who accommodated the buyer's request to cancel. Seller raised the cancelation, Feebay contacted the buyer, guess what: buyer did not care to reply nor acknowledge the cancelation, so it took ages for the cancellation to go thru and for the seller to relist the item (because you can't relist just in case seller decides to pay). Very inconvenient.
