Nvidia Shield Discussion Thread

I couldn't find one on OzBargain yet so I thought I'd start one.

My motives are to replace my aging WDTV Live Media Player. These nVidia Shield Android TV's look truly awesome. They're a bit pricey but maybe if you plan to play the odd game with it then you can use games to help justify the price. Regardless, it's the most powerful and capable Android TV media player on the market right now (by far)

$199 USD http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00U33Q940?keywords=nvidia%…

If all goes to plan, I will add all the juicy information & links here in the OP to help making a choice easier for us all.

  • I got the 16GB version, paid for the quickest freight (3 days) and it cost me $301.18. It could have been about $15 cheaper with their regular freight option.
To answer your question in the other thread, yes I got the $30 Google Play store credit and 3 month of Google Play Music. They didn't email me the code, I had to do a chat session with them. Before the chat session I made sure my default Amazon address was a US one, as the T&C in that promo is for US residence only.

It is awesome with Kodi, they have a specific build for it - http://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=228361
This allows for 24P media playback and framerate switching. Nvidia are proactive on listening to feedback. They will be releasing mpeg2 support vey soon, followed by HD Audio, and hopefully 23.976 support.

I haven't used it for gaming yet, except for 30 seconds streaming of Just Cause 2 from my PC.

    • Thanks snuke.

Desite the main purpose of me buying this is for media playing (my WDTV simply isn't keeping up with technology anymore) I'm also a little interested in the gaming side of things, I guess because my "media player budget" is around $150, so if games are something I never touch, it's a little out of my league… (the things an OzBargain'er will do to justify a new toy, right?)

I've since answered some of my gaming questions.

      • GRID Gaming is completely out for me, I'm stuck with slow ADSL2+.

      • PC Streaming is still an option, though I'll need to upgrade my video card (another expense)

Is there any other type of gaming, like can you just play some standard Google Play games, ie: non-intensive stuff that won't require the massive bandwidth of GRID, or is it just GRID & PC modes available?

It's a shame the standard remote isn't er, "standard" :) Seems like an odd choice but obviously margins play a role and nVidia pushing the gaming side of things. I'll probably order the remote as an accessory.

As for 16gb/500gb I don't see much point in buying the Pro for +$100 USD. Considering all the expansion options on the 16GB (USB and SD) - you could literally add 1.5TB External USB 3.0 HDD for $90 AUD.

I wonder how long it takes for someone to figure out how to hack and add internal support anyway. nVidia said it's not possible but that's just encouraging someone to do it surely? :)

  • You can play games form the Google store, apparently the selection isn;t great right now, but Nvidia are getting some big games ported such as Borderlands 2 and Crysis 3. The Pro version will include a copy of Borderlands.
I did and would pass on the remote unless you must have either or both, the voice search and 3.5mm audio plug in. As a remote, it is lacking. If you don;t have one, buy a Harmony 650, they are frequently on here in the $40 area. I love mine, much better control
See here for what I did to get all controls over Kodi - http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=2379403&r…

As per all Android devices it gets odd with inbuilt and add on storage. Right now, you can store the games on an external card, but the updates have to come onto the inbuilt storage, and this can cause problems. Android M will fix a lot of the issues, you can install the Dev versions now, general release is expected around September.

    • I actually like the minimalist approach of the Shield remote, would you be interested in selling yours to me perhaps? I used to have a Harmony but they're not for me.

      • I didn't buy the remote.

        • Ah I misread you, my bad.

  • Hi guys,

    This unit is brilliant.

Replacing my WDTV Live and leaving an Apple TV still in the box.

I'm hoping someone can help with reliable instruction on getting Movie25 installed.

    Appreciate any help.

    Thanks in advance.

    • I can't help you with Movie25, never heard of it before now (I have Kodi + a 24TB NAS for my entertainment) but I'll give this a bump, hopefully someone else will help you out.

      • Thanks,

No other bites yet, but im keeping busy with US NetFlix & HULU Plus.

Any tips on uninstalling a package within KODI?

  • can you watch stuff off your hard drive with this ?? or ONLY streaming via phone tablet etc ??

    • The Nvidia TV Shield is a brilliant device. You can stream content off the internet like youtube, college humour, Netflix, and Hulu (with the relevant subscriptions).

You can also map local content on your home network like music, movies etc.

I highly recommend this product (it does so much I still have an APPLE TV sealed in the box as there is nothing that the Nvidia TV Shield can't do)

      • hmmm sounds great but im hoping to replace my WD live tv with this if i could plug my hard drive and watch movies off it. bascailly i want a new media player i dnt want to stream everything

        • Yes, you can plug your hard drive in and play media from it. This replaced my WD TV, and it is night and day in the difference. Soooooo much speed to good old slow WD.

  • anyone seen any good deals on the shield tv lately? am looking to get one to replace my Boxee Box!
b&h photo has 16GB version for USD$198.95 but the shipping is a killer (USD$65 to ship to Australia) :-(

    • +1

This is where I bought it from.

      Shipping is notably less.

      http://www.amazon.com/NVIDIA-SHIELD-Streaming-Chromecast-Adv…
$199.99 + $17.40 Shipping & Import Fees Deposit to Australia

      Hope it helps!

    • There's been a few amazon UK/Germany/France deals on it in the last month, cheapest I saw was Amazon UK selling for ~AU$220 shipped. Should have posted it :(

  • And it's been around this price for over a year… I wonder if it will ever drop the standard price or come out with a newer version: http://camelcamelcamel.com/NVIDIA-SHIELD-Streaming-Chromecas… Wouldn't mind buying one sub $250 AUD shipped.

  • Looks like I missed out on the latest deal. Anywhere under AU $230?

  • Any good deals for the shield at the moment?
