Jetstar & PayPal issue with Amex

Morning everyone,

Just tried to pay for some added Jetstar baggage and Paypal has removed my Amex card I've had linked for years and it won't let me re add it.

Is this a new policy change? I've been trying to pay everything with the Amex card for the points, now its left me with my plain old Visa….

  • My AmEx cards are still there, what does it say when you attempt to re-add the card?

    • It says cad is not accepted. Can only add Visa, Mastercard and something called Discovery.

I can see my Amex is still saved in my profile, but it doesn't let me choose it to pay anything.

      • That's odd. I just removed and re-added my Amex now and it lets me choose it from the payment screen.

        From help:

What credit cards can I use with PayPal?
You can use Visa, MasterCard, Discover or American Express to make PayPal payments.

Might need to give them a call if no one else has any ideas, might just be an issue with your particular card: 1800 073 263 from here

        • Thanks mate, will do.

      • Discovery is American? Are you on the Australian site?

  • my AMEX card still linked to my Paypal too.

havnt tried to add another one though

  • Could this be Jetstar not letting me use it?

    • Sorry when I said re-add the card, I meant in your PayPal account, not on the Jetstar payment screen. I thought it wasn't allowing you to re-add it in your PayPal account. Now I am following what you meant.

Yeah it appears Jetstar don't allow American Express PayPal payments, so it's just Jetstar, nothing wrong with your account. On PointHacks "Payment takes place over at Paypal…but it won’t let you use an American Express, unfortunately"

You'll just have to use a different card type for Jetstar if you wanted to use PayPal.

      • Jetstar are so so stingy.

I guess being the price match airline they have to be. Will only fly those guys if I am doing the price beat.

        • I think the problem lies with Amex as they charge the merchants so much more than Visa or Master.

        • @stargalaxy:

Depends on the size of the merchant.

Hey guys, on a related note, can you set your credit card as the default fund source rather than the bank account? Every time theres a transaction, I have to remember to manually select my cc as the source, but there are times I forget. I lose on paying with cc + the points.

    • I don't believe there is anyway to do it, very annoying.

Last time I checked the PayPal forums users said the only way around it was to delete your bank accounts, so credit card is the only payment method it can choose. That is obviously not very convenient though if you are regularly withdrawing funds from PayPal and not something I've tried.

      • That's what I've done. I only add bank account if I'm receiving money (which is rarely). Then delete again.

        • That is a great way to do it, but at the end of the day - if you are a seller too, then you'd need a bank account. And IIRC there was some absurd rule of needing to have a bank account connected for x days or something before you could sell… Any sellers have clarity on this?

  • Just bought something off eBay and used AMEX so still works. Guess it depends on the merchant.

Jetstar not letting you use Amex to pay.

  • It's silly though. I've paid for my flights using price beat, to add baggage I can select to pay with credit card. They accept Amex there with no fees, but using PayPal is also free but doesn't take Amex… Weird.
