Bridging a Modem - FTTB

Hi all,

I have read the following: http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=2316401

Planning on signing up for TPG FTTB and understand that I will need to bridge their given modem/router to my current ADSL2+ modem/router if I want to use it's WiFi.

The current modem/router I have is the TPLink TDW8980.

I would like to know how to access the the TPG modem/router if I will bridge it to the TPLink (access the tpg's web ui when connected over WiFi on the TPLink).

I have also read through the tplinks user manual but it doesn't clarify how to connect it to make a bridge.

Can you guys/ladies please provide some tips on how to do this?

Thanks in advance,
Dennis

  • Do you mean that you need a wireless bridge (just using TP as a wireless AP)? You can just disable the DHCP Server settings on your TPLINK and it would work.

You can even change the TP router's IP address so you can manage it any time (if you wish to do so).

    • What I mean is this:

      TPG Modem > TPLINK

I plan on having the TPLINK as the Wireless Router (everything will connect to it). The TPG is there just because it has to be there (VDSL).

I want everything to be just like it is now with Exetel ADSL2+. ATM the TPLINK is my modem/router but I'm planning the move to TPG's FTTB.

      • +1

then you need to figure out how to enable bridging mode for FTTB modem first.

sometimes it might be tricky and it depends on the model number of the modem you get from TPG.

AFAIK, TDW8980 has a WAN port so you can disable the in-built modem without a problem.

        • Yeah. Thanks for the tips. Currently doing some reading here:http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=2316401#r1

  • You don't have to Bridge the modem.. you could just use the TP-Link as a Wireless access point instead and leave the NAT and DHCP to the TPG Modem.

    • Problem is that that according to Whirlpool Forums which I trust, the given modem isn't the best with less control, harder UI, and lower speeds, therefore I want everything done through the TPLINK with minimal problem.

  • Is /forum-replies.cfm?t=814956 supposed to be a link to something?

    • Yes

      • Cool. Where to?

        • Whirlpool forums. Fixed it up now :-)

  • This can be done with OpenWRT (assuming your device supports it). Don't know about the stock firmware
