Seems like the education sale of this laptop is back. You need to have access to an edu email account to purchase this.

This is the 3rd generation with broadwell cpu.

$1,439 is for the i5 4G 1080p model, add $55 to upgrade to WQHD screen, and $83 for 8GB memory.
SSD upgrade is probably better that you do it by yourself, much cheaper this way. BTW, I think the ssd m2 port on this device support both pcie and sata, so if you want maximum performance, be sure to pick the pcie one.

Some extra note:
1. You can add a basic usb dock for extra $1, not that useful compared to the onelink plus dock, but it's just $1
2. The touchscreen version of wqhd display adds >100g weight and some thickness, possible shorter battery life as well.
3. For those who care, x1 gen3 seems to be one of the best top laptops for linux support, the new dell xps 13, hp spectre x60 both have the sound issue.

Word of warning about for anyone thinking of upgrading the ssd themselves. It's a non standard size and welded on. I had a hell of a time trying to recover data from my X1 earlier this year after it died.

What do you mean by non standard size? Every X1 from Gen 1 to 3 has used standard SSD formats and what do you mean by welded on? Every X1 from Gen 1 to 3 uses screws to hold the SSD in.

Check out the service manuals and it'll show you in detail how to replace the SSD.

    • the memory is welded on,the ssd is NOT.
Any standard M.2 ssd can be used on this machine, and it's super easy.

I own this laptop and it's great. Although the brightness of the laptop is pretty poor. 100% brightness is like equivalent to 60-70% brightness on the new xps 13 or a MacBook. So I have to use it on 100% brightness at all times because otherwise it's too dark to see things. Which could possibly the reason why I can only squeeze out 5 hours of usage off it….. (Couple of PDF files open, browsing using internet explorer, music playing through iTunes)

One of the best things about thinkpads, the keyboard. I loooooove it. Hands down, the best keyboard in a laptop.

    • agree with the screen brightness. the non touch one has maximum brightness of 300 nits, and the touch one is only 270 nits.

I can't log in either using my existing account that I used to purchase a fully loaded X1 a few months ago. I haven't tried to reset the password as it's my wife's work email and I assume given what you have said is that there is another problem at the moment.

      • Yeah hopefully they resolve it soon.
did you go with the touch screen? How do u find the laptop overall?
        Is the screen matte?

I had the first gen X1 fully loaded at my previous job and went for the same spec again for my personal one. The touchscreen I didn't use much on the gen 1 and I don't use it that much on the gen 3 but you have to take the touchscreen to get the high resolution whereas in the US they can get the high resolution screen without the touchscreen. The difference in brightness is 300nits for the high resolution and 270nits for the high resolution touchscreen. The screen has a coating and it's a matte finish which I like.

The notebook is great, I had no problems with my previous one and this one is even better. I went for the 512GB SSD as it's the M.2 PCIe one and over double the speed of the Sata ones. The 256GB version is in short supply. More details here - http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/samsung-sm951-m.2-pcie-s…

My only complaint would be I would like 16GB but I can live without that. I'll be taking this to Europe this year as it's so small/light it'll barely be noticed in my backpack, last year I took the Thinkpad 8 tablet which worked well but it was difficult at times when backing up media etc so this time I'll take a fully blown notebook and probably the Thinkpad 8 as well for handheld usage.

        • @Maverick-au:
actually, if you configure it from the 1080p models (both i5 and i7), you will have the option to upgrade to wqhd non touch

Maybe now you do but a few months ago it wasn't an option like the 256GB M.2 drive (which may still not be an option).

      • Is the login working for you guys again? I can't login either, it gives me "Account is locked from direct login (use external account linked to this account for login)" and I have no idea what that is supposed to mean…

        • nope, been trying to create one all day to no avail. :(
