If they are genuine, this seems to be a deal mostly based on shipping - apparently 5-11 business days to AU.

    • When you go to purchase them it says 15-25 days

      • Ah, I take what I said back then. I was wondering what they were doing to 'fix' the shipping time, but it makes sense if it's simply not true.

    • +3

The product page advertises 5-11 business days shipping, but as rakkihizoku has said, the order confirmation email states 15-25 days. I placed an order a week ago and when I queried the discrepancy with Newfrog, they told me it would take 15 to 25 days to deliver, but sometimes it will only take 10 days to arrive. (And yes, I know that sounds a little contradictory, but that's what they said.) I promptly cancelled my order, but have yet to be refunded.

Interesting to note that they haven't corrected their advertised shipping timeframes yet.

      • +1

Curious as to why this made you promptly cancel order. Did you absolutely need a set of earphones sooner? Or was it more on principle, you're not ok with paying for them under one set of details only to be told other?

        • +2

At the time I placed the order, a couple of different stores were selling the Xiaomi Piston 3 headphones for roughly the same price. I picked Newfrog purely because of their advertised shipping times, and felt a bit cheated when I found out they were way off.

I had also hoped that the order cancellation might prompt them to amend the shipping details on their product page, but no such luck.

Last but not least - I have a bit of a bee in my bonnet about misleading and deceptive conduct, so I don't like to support businesses engaging in those practices.

tl;dr - not necessity, just principle.

Old frog died. It's just me and Newfrog now.

  • +2

Is this legit? Newfrog.com has bad reviews everywhere and pretty much everyone advises to stay away.

    • +2

I ordered a DVR from them, came in good time, good communication.

      • +1

Roughly how long did it take?

        • +3

Mine took about 12 days in actual shipping time, had to wait longer for the item to come into stock because i wanted a different colour. Any issues you can pm them, they have a ozbargain account and they reply.

  • +2

    damn..paid 20usd just yesterday for a pair

  • Yeah not too sure about these companies selling them for cheap. Bought some "recently" from Allbuy.com @$20ea, but it's been almost 1 month since i placed the order and i'm still waiting for them haha (bought on 15/05)

    • +2

I bought on 13/05 and they arrived Monday so hopefully yours should arrive soon! They're great quality for the price.

      • Yeah hopefully, kind of regret not paying 3 dollars for max 9 day delivery. Does that mean your parcel arrived … on a public holiday? lol

        • Ahhhh you have a point! I think it must have actually been Friday in that case as I had to collect it from the post office. I work weekends so it's usually all a bit of a blur!

EDIT: It was definitely Friday, I received some other parcels from China in the letterbox but they left a card for these.

    • I ordered mine on the 27/04 and they came yesterday hah! Hopefully yours arrive a lot sooner.

    • +2

Mine (Pistons 2.0) just arrived today. I ordered mine around the same time as well.

      • +3

Maybe Piston 4.0 will be out before 3.0 arrives? :P

    • I still haven't received mine (ordered 27/04)…

    • Mine took almost a month, 28/4-25/5, so sounds like yours are roughly on schedule. should expect them soon.

      • +1

Been checking the mailbox everyday for the past week haha

  • Just ordered a pair, fingers crossed they're legit!

    • I hope so too!

  • Bought two pairs from another deal before, just a heads up that the volume controls don't work on iPhone but should work on android since its designed for em.

    • +1

Thoughts on them? How good is bass/quality?

      • +3

They're really good earphones. Not for bass-heads. More of a balanced sound but by no means lacking in bass. Sound and build quality is as good as any other ~$60-100 IEM I've tried. Great value.

edit: Oh, and in addition to andew5s' comment about the buttons. They suck. I find it really hard to distinguish the middle play button from the up/down buttons without looking.

        • +4

I disagree with this. I have the Piston 2.1 in both standard gold as well as in silver (better) and bought the Piston 3s recently.

3.0 is way more bassy than the 2.1s, but they sound more muffled for anything else.

If all you listen to is EDM/ Dubstep/ Electro, get the 3.0 they are the bomb. If you listen to anything else (I've tested rock, pop, k-pop, alternative, metal) either of the 2.1s are much better than the 3.0s

I personally listen to all those things, so I stick with my 2.1s because what you lose on everything else isn't worth the bass clarity for EDM (but damn is the bass good).

That being said, 3.0s look better and fit better.

        • +2

I haven't owned the 2's before to make a comparison but from what I can hear, the bass isn't what I had expected it to be. It's present, but I would have much preferred more bass. Good clarity in sound. My old CX300 II's had pretty good bass. Damfrog is right 100% about everything imo, the bass to the buttons.

        • +1

I have same feedback as dam frog. The buttons are small and squashed together so when you try to press the middle button you'll often miss it for the outer buttons, this gets annoying when you try to skip a song by double pressing the middle button. The sound quality is good but the design doesn't block out as much outside noise as previous earphones I've had. For the price though it's still worth the purchase.

        • I've owned CX300 II and Piston 2.1. CX300 had more bass, but Piston's are better in every other way. Goes well with my Xiaomi phone.

    • An alternative is the 1MORE Piston, which is the same product designed by the same company, it just looks slightly different (rebadged from the Xiaomi colors) but has full iPhone support.

Would it be wiser to buy these headphones from Banggood? I sort off trust Banggood more to sell genuine stuff and it only costs a dollar or two more. (I bought the Xiaomi power bank and USB light and they booth seem completely legit.)

    http://www.banggood.com/Original-Xiaomi-Piston-3-Reddot-Desi…

    • Banggood's stuff are genuine…i also rather pay 2 bucks more just to get some assurance.

  • +3

I swear this is the hundred times I seen deals on Xiaomi piston

    • literally?

  • I also bought mine from Banggood. Roughly AU$23.

Apparently shipped on the 18th of May. Received on the 2nd of June. Not too bad at all.

  • +3

Trust me Xiaomi piston 2.1 is better.3 is only more comfortable nothing else. I regret my purchase

  • +1

    nice

  • How do these China made buds compare with low end big company's earphones?

In taking about low end Sony, TDK, and other big brands that offer $20 earphones.

    • I haven’t tried these. But Chinese audio goods are very good value for money. I have a pair of Vsonic earphones ($40) and they sound a lot better than anything offered by the major brands for $120+.

Therefore these will actually sound decent. Where those low end ones from major brands would be rubbish.

      • I've got vsonic as well, very good compared to other major brands

    • The reason that pistons are always on deals and are so popular is because they are generally considered to be equivalent to the premium $80-$100 earphones from brand names, but so much cheaper (y).

    • +1

They're actually far better than those other brands. The only other budget earphones I'd put in comparison with them would be Monoprice.

I also bought mine from Allbuy back in mid May, just received them yesterday. alza6991's review on the sound is pretty accurate in my opinion, I prefer the sound of the 2.1s as well. Still a great pair of earphones for this price though.

    • Bear in mind those big name brands you've mentioned will make their headphones in china too… just sayin' :o)

    • Bought a pair of TTPOD T1E (Sen IE800 Chinese rip off) for about $30 delivered and they are honestly one of the best pairs of IEMs I've owned.
Have had Shure, Etymotic, Senheiser etc. and won't be spending that kind of money again until at least tax time.. oh..

  • Thanks for the 2.1 vs 3 advice.
Looking at Banggood, can anyone tell me what version these are?
    http://www.banggood.com/Original-Xiaomi-In-ear-Handsfree-Ear…
It says original so i'm assuming 1.0 but that could be poor translation of genuine.
    Thanks.

    • that looks like gen 1 to me, gen 2 is same style but its metal or metallic looking in gold or silver. Gen 3 is featured in OP's deal.

Gen 3 is more of a reference sound whilst Gen 2 is more bassy. The quality of the sound is apparently pretty equivalent. The big difference is the physical design which should make the gen 3 more comfortable. If you have small ear space/area (lol?) then gen 2 will be uncomfortable with the size/shape of it.

      • Gen 2 = reference sound, Gen 3 = bassy.

        • oops my bad

        • +1

Wrong. Pistons 2.1 = Bassy, Pistons 3 = slightly more Reference

          @KLoNe:

Everyone has different opinions, and everyone has different frequency ranges that they can hear.

From my qualitative opinion, after using the 2.1s for over 100 hours, I feel an immediate difference when I use the 3.0s. Way more bass, more muffled mids and weaker highs.

Maybe its my music, maybe its my ears, not saying either is right or wrong :)

        • @KLoNe: I agree with you here. I found that the V3 are better balanced.

    • piston 3 from banggood - not to be confused with piston 3 youth edition.

      • Does bang good have a coupon code?

        • +1

not that I know of. But I think you can use cashrewards for some cashback.

They're one of the cheapest everyday prices anyway- just expect 4-6 weeks shipping.

    • Those are the new "colourful edition". They are the budget version, inferior to both the 2.1s and 3.0. Sound is still better than Apple headphones, but they feel very cheap.

I'd recommend paying a little bit more for the 2.1s, especially the silver version if you can find them.

  • Expired? Code not doing anything :(

  • "Tip: Change currency to AUD"

Why? You leave yourself open to multiple levels of currency conversion fees & losses.

    • +2

Probably because they're 20.23 in AUD and 17.90 in USD.

with a 28 degrees card, that USD price will come out at 23.51 AUD

      • Deal says "AUD $19.20"

There are more cards than just 28deg.

        • Deal says "AUD $19.20"

          There is a coupon code

There are more cards than just 28deg.

Yes. More cards which will likely make the USD price on the site come out even worse due to not as good exchange rates and currency conversion fees.

        • -2

@Domingo: The coupon price is the important one we're comparing.
Blinkers much? More cards that offer better features, same/less fees, without conversion fees.

        • @Utopian: I'm really not sure where you're going with this.

The coupon price is the important one we're comparing.

The price the site shows for the item is (was at the time) $17.90 in USD. If you change the currency to AUD on the site, it comes out at $20.23.

Putting the item in your cart and applying the coupon code would add an extra discount that would bring the total price down to $19.20 AUD.

Blinkers much? More cards that offer better features, same/less fees, without conversion fees.

I was simply comparing the USD to AUD conversion rate the the 28 degrees card offers, which is considered one of the better options for making USD purchases, to the AUD price that the website was offering. Since 28deg uses the Mastercard rate, it's entirely feasible that other cards offer an equivalent service.

If you have a card that's better than the 28 degrees card, please share the details so other people can get one too. I'd be interested.

        • -2

@Domingo: ya really are lost, huh. Can't find the clear points. And don't know of others cards mentioned plenty here. I give up.

    • Because its literally cheaper to just buy it in AUD - Citibank plus or 28 degrees, use the official visa rate and its still cheaper than that. Either they still want to sell to AUS consumers or they're converting directly from HKD to AUD? I dunno how it all works, though.

      • If you're buying in AUD, then no "official VISA rate" is being used. AUD to AUD is 1:1
They're confused, which has derailed everything.

  • nice! do these come without mic?

    still working for me

    • yeh they do, on the back of the controller of the right ear bud wire.

  • +1

Contacted newfrog, code is working again.

  • +1

Can anyone recommend a good place to get the 2.1 Gen ones? :)

    • -1

Also, are they really heaps better than the 3rd gen ones?

      • I find I can't get a good fit from my 2.1s and prefer wearing the 3s, to the extent that I couldn't even tell you my perceptions of them from a sound perspective.

The only time I use the 2.1s is when I need to make a phone call and they happen to be nearby.

        • Thanks mate :) I reckon I might just get the 3rd Gen ones. I prefer the look anyways.

  • Just picked up my order from the GPO.

I noticed there's no serial number to verify if it's genuine like the power banks.

How can I tell if it's genuine?

    • someone correct me if im wrong but i dont think pistons come with serial numbers

      • Yeah i remember reading that too. Someone said the ones WITH serial numbers are fakes.

  • +2

Thanks to the OP for this - have ordered, went for the tracked delivery, seemed reasonable for $1.92 extra, so AU$21.12 incl this shipping. Weirdly the Newfrog website then mentioned US$18 or so, but the Paypal receipt clearly said charged in AUD (which would be around US$16.34 at today's exchange rates).

  • +1

Nice find with the coupon discount
    Bought one

Now will wait for a month for them to arrive :)

  • +1

I find these are good if you are sitting still, when you walk with them you can hear every step you take through the earphones.

  • +1

Thanks OP. Ordered two for my family. Cheap and decent audio quality. Can use it for gym instead of my better ones =)

  • Ordered on the 28/05 pick up from my LPO today 12/06. First listen, sounds muddy compare to my KSC75…

  • Coupon doesn't seem to be working anymore?

  • +1

The code just worked for me; checkout and confirmation all good. Still seems active.

  • +2

just received mine - 2nd pair ordered from them. and again less than 2 weeks to deliver.

    • Oh awesome, I hope I get mine soon. My last pair got caught in my car door before I drove for about half an hour… I now have 1 ear bud and 15cm of cable left :'(

    • ditto - ordered mine 12 days ago and they arrived today - very impressed with the build quality and sound. play/pause and volume controls all work fine on my Galaxy S6 (and the key thing, it fits neatly into the headphone socket on the Spigen Neo Hybrid case for my S6!)

  • Do Newfrog ship things separately? I ordered a few things with pistons and the extra stuff was delivered, but not my pistons.

    🚢

    • All good - received it today (as a separate parcel)

  • code NFOZxiaomi not working for me now?

  • Bump with postage details for anyone interested.

Ordered mine on 12/06. They just arrived (Melbourne) yesterday (29/06).

    17 days postage.
