Aussie Based Online BT Servers or 1-Click Hosts for budget ISPs

Hi guys,

I am currently using Dodo's unlimited ADSL and like other budget providers the oversea connection during peak hours are painfully slow. However, Aussie based contents like NetFlix, Youtube or Twitch are still quite decent. Without switching to a more expensive ISP like Telstra, Internode or iiNet, I am trying to find a work around for a faster peak hour Internet access.

I have been using various one click hosts and torrents to get large files yet their speed all drop below 100KB/s at peak hours. I am trying to find a file hosting or BT offline downloading service which has an Australia based server. Or even better, a VPN that could give you that kind of capability. My budget is $15AUD/month maximum. It would be great if you can share the experience that you had with these services and which one works out the best.

Not sure if this kind of topic is prohibited. Admin, please delete it if it causes trouble.

Cheers.

  • one click hosts will generally be limited to that kind of speed if you don't have a paid account.

Torrents generally saturate your router (and maybe the exchange), so that might be the reason it slows.

What about downloading a video from revision3? just ping the download location and work out where the server is. It should be from the US.

If ALL overseas speeds are slow, a vpn might be beneficial. If it's just torrents, a seedbox would be better.

    • Thanks for the reply Davo. Maybe I was a little bit too brief on describing the situation, I tried all those one click hosts with paid accounts and my download speed outside of peak hours are fantastic at around 1.8 megabyte per sec. I know torrents are basically a rabbit hole so I rather rely on those online torrent servers which download it for you before you transferring them via http.

The problem with all these is that their servers are located overseas which means I cannot get a decent speed downloading in peak hours. I am trying to look for a service which has a server within Australia so I can pretty bypass the peak hour throttling.

      • So you'll need an Australian seedbox, or an Australian VPN and overseas seedbox.

I'd be running a (few) tracert and seeing if the "pipes" outside australia are the limit. Get a friend to help

  • Have you thought about changing ISPs? TPG have plans priced fairly similar to Dodo and generally speaking (yes there are exceptions for certain telephone exchanges) the congestion at peak times is much lower and they have far more international bandwidth available as they own the submarine cable that connects the east coast of Australia to the rest of the internet.

    Just a thought.

    • Yes I actually have but I am not sure how much better TPG is comparing to Dodo. The last time I used TPG was like 10 years ago which was ADSL1 with a monthly quota of some like 20G. Whirlpool also has way too many mixed reviews on TPG and Dodo. Have you used both of them and find TPG to be significantly better?

      • I've used TPG for 5 years on their home phone/ADSL2+ product and have had very minimal issues, no congestion during peak times and less outages than some of the other bigger ISPs have reported.

Have got friends on Dodo who are computer illiterate but every time I've used their connection it has been horrible, and they sync at about 6Mbps faster than I do.

Like I said though, the reason you'll see so many mixed experiences on a place like Whirlpool is because some exchanges are congested, some not. Some people actually understand how the internet works, some don't. Some people expect premium customer service from a cheap ISP, other's realise they aren't going to get it so don't expect it.

You get what you pay for but to be honest I wouldn't touch Dodo with a barge pole if I was looking for a new ISP.

        • Tbh, I barely use customer service and mainly trouble shoot myself so that's not an issue for me. However, if all these are exchange related then it's really difficult to judge. For most part I am quite happy with Dodo, I am 200m away from their Telstra exchange and I am getting the maximum speed 20mbps even to oversea sites at day time.

  • Invest in a Seedbed (It will download the files for you) and then you download it over HTTP or FTP.

    • Do you know any good Aussie seedbeds?

      • Ops I mean seedbox. (http://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/seedboxes)
It is best not to use a seedbox inside of our country.

        • The problem is that I can't get a fast link to an oversea seedbox during peak hours.

        • @maxhu:
Are you able to download it from an seedbox in off-peak hour? Then watch it during peak hours?

        • @Linkiepoo: that's actually what I am doing at the moment but it's kinda annoying. I'm trying to look for a better workaround.
