Storing Loyalty Cards on Your Phone, Does It Work?

Hi,

I hate carrying heaps of loyalty cards. Nandos has an app which brings up a barcode on your phone and they scan it which seems to work well.

I just put my everyday rewards card into this app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.stocard.sto… and it looks fairly good. Has anyone done anything similar? Does it work?

Thanks

I use that app and it works 90% of the time.

    • Does it work for woolworths & flybuys? Thanks

What do you mean 'does it work'? App constantly crashes when you display the cards barcode? It gets cards mixed eg. swapping Myers with Woolworths/Everyday Rewards? Instead of duplicating your cards barcode, it replaces lines and numbers with emojis?

Whether it scans or not at the store, depends on the stores laser and whether it can read from your phones screen- a hardware thing, not something an app can change. If the cards don't scan, ask the staff to key in the numbers or key it in yourself at self checkouts.

Sorry if I was unclear. Do the woolworths and coles scanners have the capability to scan a barcode from the phones screen?

          @daveaus:

          Coles, yes

Woolworths, unclear, but I think yes.

          @daveaus:

The app itself is fine, the scanner don't always read it though.
Some stores have different scanners to others so its a draw of the luck, but mostly it works fine. If it doesn't they enter the membership number manually anyway.

@scrimshaw: the Woolworths in WA work. Sometimes there an additional scanner attached which works fine.

Stocard is the best I hate carrying cards around too. If they don't have the latest type of scanner it won't work but they can manually key it in ;)

        • @daveaus:
          Just started using Stocard myself
Make sure you turn off the notifications so you don't get every catalogue!

In my experience the self checkout scanner works everytime in Woollies
The regular checkout does not - but they can key int he number and it works
Ditto at Woollies/Caltex petrol - doesn't scan but they can key it

I also buy vouchers online 5% off for Woollies (I use for petrol but can do groceries & Big W)
You get them emailed as ecard and then save to Stocard and use that way too

        • @scrimshaw: Woolworths works perfectly for me, I can never get Flybuys to work on their stupid special scanners.

          Love this app, best design.

      • I have flybys, woolies and supercheap on so far and it works.

        Running on a galaxy s5.

What app is available/good for iPad please?

    • Stocard for iPad/Stocard for iphone

  • I've tried some apps like this last month…
I scanned three cards initially: flybuys card, Woolworths everyday rewards card and my local library card.

Then tried all of them at their respective locations.

    The library card worked beautifully.
    The flybuys card didn't.
Neither did the Woolworths EDR card.

I use stocard. It works on the newer scanners.

For Coles, use the 'flybuys'-marked scanner next to the EFTPOS/card reader. That scanner is camera-based, which works on backlit screens better - as opposed to the traditional laser scanner use by actual POS machines.

  • At Coles when you use the Self-Checkout there is a Discrete Scanner that works better than using the Scanning Surface you pass Grocery Items across.

    Ask for assistance when scanning…

I use Beep'nGo for Flybuys and Everday Rewards. Flybuys works all the time and ER works 90% of the time.
I have trouble at some petrol stations and cash registers (works all the time on self serve).

    • If you have a Samsung Galaxy device, you can use it with all scanners because Samsung devices come pre-installed with a companion app which allows Beep'nGO to use the IR sensor to transmit the barcode so older scanners are able to read the "barcode". This video probably explains it better than I do https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ES6DCSYGuh0

Look mate, I never carried a wallet since 3 years ago, and NEVER had an issue.
even if the scanner doesn't work, they type it in manually, but it works depends on your phone, I tried, Samsung, LG and they are good, but iphone not reliable.

It is good to go walletless, you don't have to carry that many papers, notes, shrapnel, photos, cards, and if you lose your phone, you have your wallet!
Plus it saves animals, your pants and your pockets.

    Just a few things if you want to join walletless club;

Dont just trust the apps, have your free google drive to have a back up on the go, it comes handy specially when you are away and need your wallet. also soon google android pay.
have one or two, credit or debit cards until you get use to new condition or if your phone does not support cashless payments, some banks provide minicards to stick on or put in your phone.
have a single note, like 50 or 20 just in case your phone dies.
plan ahead if you are going somewhere you guess you might need the actual card, take the card or take your wallet.

I agree. Do it and you won't look back

A man should "never" carry coins in a wallet or a big wallet 😉

  • I scanned my EDR and flybuy cards back to back to save a wallet slot, tried to use for 1st time last night at woolies petrol and didn't scan. Checkout chick keyed number in, but it took a while so def. a nuisance. I expect most wouldn't do it for you. She pointed out how my scan wasn't of sufficient quality, and that the barcode lines need to be sharp and distinct.

So might depend on quality of scan and quality of phone screen - reflection etc.

    • If you use stocard then you're not scanning them but getting a digital copy of the barcode. So as long as your phone isn't ancient, it will be good enough quality.

  • My parents use Beep 'n Go on their Galxy Note 3's and they love it. An Amoled screen works better with the scanners too.

  • the idea of Stocard is fantastic… the practical use of it not so much.. have tried it at woolies with the EDR and Coles Express for Flybuys and does not work. waste of time IMO…

Yes I am using the same app. Its working 90% of the time.
In case if it doesn't work, you can do it manually or ask them to enter it for you.

Stocard on iPhone 6 works well for flybuys and EDR, but as others point out, if there's a discrete scanner (located near top right corner of the screen at my local Coles) works much better.

What I don't like is the fact it uses their own cloud storage rather than Apple's own iCloud. I am unsure if they have a similar practice for Android.

I've gone the opposite direction and photocopied (scanned/printed) all of the cards I need and taped them to the inside of my wallet. Works 100% of the time and don't need to use my phone. My wallet is already out to pay so may as well use this.

  • I just downloaded Stocard for Android.
How do you people get clear front and back of the card shots to store in these apps?

PS: When I stored the front and back, the pictures are not very clear and they cannot be zoomed in, which means the finer details of the cards cannot be read.

    Comments or suggestions?

    • You're supposed to enter the card number (which codes for a barcode the app will produce and should be identical to your cards barcode) or scan the barcode

      • I already do that.

However, under Notes tab, you can put pictures of the cards front and back also.

This is what I'm talking about.

  • Has anyone successfully used the login feature for each card? I can't get any to work.

    • I haven't tried at all yet.

I used the app for the first time last Friday at Ikea, and it worked fine with their scanner.
      No issues at all.

  • I store mine in the Commbank app.

  • http://boombarapp.com you can also share your cards with family or freinds

  • I've personally been using that app for awhile now, with moderate success. The only issues I've really encountered that spring to mind are: some stores have had to manually key in the number as their scanners haven't been able to read the barcode properly, & at Coles & Kmart you've gotta make sure to use the hand-scanner at self-checkouts or it doesn't work.

Ooo, speaking of Coles, 1 more thing , about FlyBuys dollars, if you use them, require the physical card with the magnetic strip to utilise them, & there's no way to access them otherwise, so be careful. Otherwise it gets really embarrassing when you're broke & go to use them, but have long-since misplaced your card… found that out the hard way!

  • Glenmore park woolies work at the checkouts but the self checkouts do not.
