  • Anyone use these led bulbs before? Trying to gauge how the light brightness compare to a CFL….

    • Check the lumens of each bulb (is it correct to call them bulbs or lamps - this is a measure of how intense (or bright) the light is.

Be aware though that humans are really bad at gauging absolute values of brightness because our perception of light is largely determined by automatic processes such as pupil size and the brain interpreting relative values.

Also be aware that this is well known in the lighting industry which can lead to various dodgy practices such as overstating lumen values or making lighting that degrades quickly as far as brightness (consumers cannot notice this unless they measure light intensity due to what i just explained)

These are around equal to a 40-50 watt normal bulb, not very bright.

I bought the round 7W natural white bulbs that LED Accessories had on sale last time. They're not very bright, but I think they're bright enough.
According to Wikipedia, the luminous efficiency of incandescent bulbs is 16 lumens per watt, CFLs is 60 lumens per watt, and LED bulbs is up to 100 lumens per watt. That would make these bulbs at least as bright as a 32W incandescent or a 9W CFL.

      • Unfortunately, the figures for both wattage and lumens quoted on packaging is often way wrong. Get yourself an app for your phone/tablet and do a few comparisons and you will soon find that some 6W LEDs are far brighter than other 7W or even 9.5W LEDS. I am not saying that the app measurements are necessarily accurate without calibration however great for comparisons between different bulbs at say 1m, 2m and 3m from source. A good app will allow calibration for you device. Moreover, a good app will also measure the light temperature.

For example, new EcoMaster 7W LEDs measure 20% less bright than new Primsal 6W LEDs. And, measurement of light intensity from 50W Halogens can vary by up to 100% depending on brand and age.

  • 500 lumens is pretty dim….I'd pass…

I think 546 lumen is about right for a 7w.

  • Better to get something brighter to start with. My Philips led has come down to half brightness after 2 years, thanks for the 15 year lifetime marketing scam….

The warranty is only for 2 years and if I had realised the slow degradation in brightness I would have replaced in warranty….

I wonder if the reconditioned ones are sold anywhere under a different brand.

  • Ordered 20 Globes the other day… Thought for the price what the hell? Anyhow they arrived two days later and I am very impressed. Much brighter than I expected considering the price and a nice white light in terms of color temperature. Overall pretty happy - lets see how long they last?
