Small (Footprint) (Sit on Desk) PC

Hello,

Are there any suggestions for a small footprint, compact PC to sit on top of a desk (table)?
We have space and cable length limitations for a PC to HDMI Samsung 27" monitor.

My husband surfs the net (Chrome), emails, plays youtube clips, simple image editing (irfan), writes occasional document (OpenOffice).

We have a preference for a Windows machine.
We've discounted a chromebook.

I've suggested a laptop, but my husband would prefer a small PC.

We do not want to assemble anything ourselves, other than installing an operating system.

I'm guessing something along the lines of:
i5
2- 4 Gb RAM
SSD 250 Gb
HDMI
reasonable quality sound for classical music
Maybe some HHD?
(maybe no Op system as we have Win 7 DVDs?)
USB 2 x2 (for keyboard/mouse, printer), headphones
USB3 x1 or x2 for backup usb

Budget ~ $800

Many thanks
:)
Margaret

Perhaps something like this would be suitable as well? Takes up very little space, you can probably mount it to the back of your monitor. Might need to get some usb splitters though.

Very minimal installation… just stick in RAM and SSD and you're good to go.

  • You're missing out on half the fun not building it your self :)

But for what you have listed

My husband surfs the net (Chrome), emails, plays youtube clips, simple image editing (irfan), writes occasional document (OpenOffice).

any $200 laptop or even this would be suitable for you

+1 for the intel NUC. kick's ass with a SSD.

    something like this: http://ijk.com.au/branch/ijk/product_info.php?manufacturers_…

add 4gb ram (or even 8gb), and 250gb SSD. Install your favourite correctly licensed OS.

  • Many HP/Lenovo/(shudder)Dells are slightly smaller than a full size rig and can sit side on.

Should also look at the NUCs and the Lenovo h73 (linked above). I have one (the bottom model)

You can even get it mounted to the back of your monitor to save desk space.

Downgrade to i3 (they are better than you think)
Upgrade to 8GB of RAM (Chrome tabs eat RAM)
Consider an M.2 SSD for amazingly snappy performance.

Bonus points if your monitor already happens to have a USB hub built in.

Here you go a good quality, beautiful and small form factor pc for $599. Only downside is no SSD but I believe you can swop it out however, there is a graphic card included with is useful to playback full HD 1080p Youtube videos with no stuttering.

  • take a look at rebootit we have several of their computers run fine the little dells are great

  • Thanks everyone for your suggestions.

  • so tell us, what did you end up going with?

    • My husband is deciding, thinking, ……..
      but
since my posting his very old desktop has not been playing up so much!
If I have a vote it will be NUC.
      Thanks
      :)
