Better of getting Fit-bit Surge HR or Charge HR

Except neither of those are waterproof, so must be removed any time getting used with water. I purchased a Charge HR and Vivosmart for the misses to see which was more suitable. I was thinking the Charge HR as it seemed to be the bees knees. First impression out of the box was that the quality of the Charge was well below the Vivo. The strap on the Charge looks like an offcut, the screen is nasty cheap plastic asking to be scratched up, reviews seemed to say the screen is very susceptible to scratching.
If you see/read reviews comparing the Charge HR & Vivosmart, you will see they are very close with what they offer and each has plusses and minuses. But the killer is that the Fitbits are water resistant only, so completely useless for her requirements.

Nice find, and a great price. I've been wearing one for about 6 weeks now and can recommend highly. Upgraded from the Xiaomi Mi Band after it's electronics module popped out of the silicone band out on the road somewhere :(

The pedometer function is all well and good, but it's very handy just as a watch, great for reading texts, and the 'Move' reminder after you've been sitting at your desk for an hour is brilliant.

If you're already in the Garmin ecosystem and after a fitness band (like me) but find the Vivoactive too big or $$$, this is a great choice.

I have one and it is fantastic, very understated. Good battery life, notifications, water resistant, chest strap for gym work outs. good stuff.

JB have the HRM bundle for $229, Johnny Appleseed GPS has it for $149 + shipping ($7.95 estimate).

  • I grabbed one of these for ~$120 using the recent Dick Smith eBay sale. I've been wearing it for close to a fortnight and I find it to be great!

Thin, waterproof, great battery. I wear it next to a wrist watch and it looks fine. Screen is easy to see outdoors and it's good to be pushed to get up and move after some inactivity (although this can be a tad frustrating while driving).

Smart notifications are a little flakey as is the Garmin Connect app but for $100 and compared to a Fitbit I'd recommend it.

good to be pushed to get up and move after some inactivity (although this can be a tad frustrating while driving).

Just swerve violently side-to-side a few times.

    • Can the inactivity thing be turned off?

      • Looks like it, via the Connect app you can disable that screen on the Vivosmart. Haven't tested it myself though.

        • I tried it - deselected the Move Bar and Music from visible screens, then resync'd. The Music screen disappeared, but the Move Bar remained.

I do like the Move notification though. I slept in this morning, an hour after my set wake-up time I got a reminder buzz.

  • I bought one for my partner and is working great with Nexus 5 . Even though nexus 5 and many other phones are not listed in their compatibility list ,it does say that it works with Kitkat or higher and yes-it does..Good battery life (4 -5 days), Messages and Calls Notifications ,Alarm and the Move function-all works as its supposed to work..Top of all -it doesn't look like a gadget on our wrist - the matt finish helps it to look more like a black band and the display only gets lit when there is some sort of notification.. For $99 i would highly recommend this.

  • Great price, can anyone recommend a cheap HRM ANT+ strap to add to this? Too bad the HRM bundle isnt on special as well…

check the link at Thrift's comment -You could get it together for $157

  • I bought it from Rebel for $125 half year ago. It's a really great band. Note this band is WATERPROOF not water resistance.

  • Nice! Might grab one now…

  • Worth spending the extra over something like xiaomi or i5 plus https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/196905 ?

  • I got a Garmin Premium Heart Rate Monitor delivered today (from the eBay seller above), but could not get it paired with the VivoSmart.

First thing I checked was the battery, but it was fine.

Googling around I found it has been quite a common problem in the Garmin forums

I tried the various techniques suggested (placing the ViviSmart in the unplugged cradle; starting an activity) without success.

Also in the thread I found an obscure suggestion to pull the battery and short the contacts in the HRM for a few minutes by inserting the battery upside down (the negative battery contact doesn't touch anything, so there's no reverse polarity). When I popped the battery back in the correct way, screwed in the back cover, and strapped on the HRM, it immediately paired and started showing heart rate!

  • I don't get it. Is the only display of your heart rate with these things on a phone, that is, no conveniently small watch size wrist receiver?

    • The VivoSmart is a small watch size wrist device that monitors movement. It doesn't measure heart rate itself, for that you need a separate compatible sensor.

  • I think it is ended. Just went to JB Hfi no more discount :(
