Should We Have a Limit on The Number of Bargain Posts People Can Make?

This is to discourage "excessive" posting by a few individuals. (This discussion was started 26/11/2009 as a theoretical discussion, though it may be of practical benefit now)

What do people think of:

  • non seller publishing limit of 3 per day and 6 per 7 days
  • if a person accumulates too many "bad deals", they may get a 3 day time out
    • a bad deal has at least 2 negative votes
    • a bad deal has as at least as many negative votes as positive votes cast
    • has been visible for at least 1.5 days (allowing a number of people to express their view on it)

The aims of these moves would be:

  • not interfering with the majority of users
  • helping a few users to focus on really good bargains only
  • discouraging spammer like behaviour in a few users
  • encourages the most frequent posters to not post every single day

Comments

  • I think the existing system is fine.

Only bargains with +10 votes get displayed as a main bargain anyway.

  • I guess this is probably aimed towards the benefit of people who look at the new deals page.

Moderators and the users who want to see all the possible bargains as they get posted.

Having guidelines on how many posts is too many posts lets new users get the idea that, we are all looking for really good bargains … but not every single bargain that's out there.

Since I first started this discussion (about a week before I moved the thread here), we've had 2 new users who might've benefitted from seeing some sort of limitation guidelines, before they started posting.

One was gave us 4 or 5 bargains in a day (and mostly duplicates).

Another started posting a number of bargains out of a catalog, with one post per bargain.

I am thinking, if the other mods are agreeable, to add some sort of guidelines on this topic to the Deal Posting Guidelines, to help new users.

  • I agree with your aims, just not sure about the implementation.

For example one post then getting two negative votes right from the start takes it off the deals page, then it can never recover as no one sees it, then the poster gets a further whammy by not being able to post more. There are some serial negative voters who dont understand the implications of their negative votes.

Probably better is that the mods get alerted if there are too many posts by one person, and we then delete if necessary rather than it being automatic, that way we can use some judgment and can give advice.

    But further discussion is helpful

  • Agree with Ozpete on that one , too many not actual bargains is not a good way of retaining some sort of quality

but then we dont want to dicourage bargains as some are good some are not :)

Agree we need some judgement and advice

  • Hi OzPete and Mikinoz

    Agreed.

I am not suggesting automatic rules. I'm suggesting guidelines which will be put in the Wiki :)

These are not going to be coded, as far as I know.

These are just tips to help new users and/or users in new situations.

Moderators have the option of enforcing them and can use their own judgement when or when not, to enforce them.

I could word it so it's more of a suggestion.

In that vein, I've updated the sales rep's Wiki to have a direct link to the Deal Posting Guidelines.

I've also added a "Sales and Catalogs" section asking people to only post once from the one sale or catalog and for all members to consider using the same posts. I included advice that people don't like multiple posts on the same sale or catalog from the same person and/or on the same day as another posting about it.

    • One new poster, already has up to 7 posts a day, as at today …

      • Guilty I is, for not reading your first post closely.

I am in agreement with you and your suggestions with maybe some tweaking - but that will come after we trial this. Just need some more feedback from members.

As for sale and catalogs section it just needs to be obvious when someone posts - maybe a question they have to tick so they understand, before their post is submitted
