Nintendo DSi XL $99 - is it worth it?

So I've decided that I want to get a handheld gaming console again, haven't had anything since the original PSP console as I was busy being an adult (worst decision ever btw). I regrettably missed out on the Target eBay deal for the new 3ds and don't want to spend more then $150 on a console.

Saw in my local target that they still had a few of the older dis XLs for $99, and although I know it is significantly older I was wondering if any ozbargainers still use theirs and if it is worth it for that price? Where do you get games from (Target had none, I imagine EB pre-owned)?

As always thanks in advance for the help!

why not get a preowned 3DS. A quick look shows EB games selling for $118. https://ebgames.com.au/3ds/any/preowned

Edit: sorry thought this was an old 3DS XL..

I personally don't think it's worth it. I reckon you could get a better deal on eBay/Gumtree, which would probably come with a couple of games as well for a little bit more.

Actually, I don't think it's a good idea to get a DSi at all. As mentioned above, it's probably better to get a preowned 3DS. Note that the 3DS can also play DS games, and hence you have a much wider range of game selection to choose from, where as the DS can really only play DS games (although there is a MASSIVE catalog of DS games available).

I also think it's a waste of money, might as well put in a few extra dollars and snap up a old 3ds xl or 3ds from ebay or gumtree

    I disagree.
As somebody who also made the mistake of adulting, you might as well get the benefit of being a few generations behind.
In the last year my house acquired an original Wii. We have a catalog of 400 game titles available at an average cost of $15 per game. And that was after getting a dozen titles with the console for $100.
These games are as new and fresh to us as they were for cutting edge gamers 5 years ago paying $75 per title.
We realise there is a new Smash Bros or Mario Kart for WiiU, but the old ones are still a lot of fun.
Personally, I would look on Gumtree/Ebay for somebody selling a good package of handheld and games and worry less about which model it is, and aim more for a good collection of games that interest you at a cheap price.

    • For 99% of games I agree with you. But there is always one franchise that you want all of the games for (for me it is Fire Emblem). So going with the latest architecture is worth it just to get that one precious title - even if it is $75.

  • DSi? No.

  • Thanks everyone, didn't actually know there were that many different models, think I'm gonna have a look for someone selling a 2nd hand 3DS and games!

  • yeah, there are those upgrading to the new 3DS who will be selling the old version 3DS, you may even be able to find a used limited edition for a nice price :). Currently the only game out that you can't play on the old 3DS is Xenoblade Chronicles though some others are coming out. You might even have a friend with an old DSi that you can borrow which might make you realise you only want to keep it simple!

  • I saw a 2ds at cash converters for $80 yesterday. You should definitely get a console that plays 3ds games. You can get them cheap now and they play the whole ds range.

Just yesterday I picked up a R4 SD that came with 300+ games for the DS. A DS and a R4 chip and you are set.

I've told this story before, but I once bought a box of DS stuff at a garage sale before. Inside was to DS XL's, 2 DS's, a DSi XL, 2 DSi's…… And 2 3DS's. Including 4 3DS games and countless regular old crappy DS games and accessories. For 20 bucks.

So no, I don't think a DSi is worth it for $99, when I got one for… calculated cost of maybe $0.66. Garage sales are the way of the future!
