Do these suffer from the same problem as the 840? ie. files older that 30 days makes the drive go very slow.

I haven't kept up but last time I checked the new firmware that was meant to address the issue didn't really work.

    • +8

No these have a completely different memory controller and firmware.

The new 850 drives are not without their issues though. Back in Feb/March quite a large number of users bricked their drives after using Samsung Magician to update the firmwre.

The only SSD brand I will deal with now is Intel — they're expensive and rarely go on sale but so far proven to be reliable.

      • +1

Intel are definitely worth every dollar.

I also find Crucial quite reliable albeit they benchmark slower than other drives. I don't find much difference in day-to-day work though.

I bought an 840 Evo and am currently using it as my PC boot drive, I upgraded from the OCZ Vertex LE Special Edition (SATA2 limited) as I thought being a SATA3 drive it would be way faster. After having used it roughly a year I can report it's very slow, pretty much on par with my 3TB Seagate HDD in terms of read/write performance. I would avoid getting a Samsung EVO SSD, stick to the Pro. I'm trying to work out what I will replace my boot drive with for Windows 10 but I guess it's a matter of watching the deals.

    1yr Kogan Warranty!!!!

    • +4

Yep… It's "only" $158 at MSY or $165 at PCCG backed by a 5 year Samsung warranty. I'd rather pay that little extra for peace of mind.

      • Kogan is usually grey import, it's scary and sometimes not even that cheap. The 5 year warranty with Samsung is surprisingly good, considering they usually upgrade you/give you a brand new one without asking too many questions.

      • msy etc will still ask you to send back to manufacturer

      • +1

3 yr warranty on these ones…pro's have 5 yr wty.

        • +3

Ruh roh, was going off the PCCG product page.

@asa79 - MSY has to deal with warranty issues for the length of the manufacturer's warranty. In most instances it might be one year but where you've got longer warranties, the retailer who sold the product will have to provide that service and liaise with the manufacturer (ACCC). However you can choose to approach the manufacturer directly for warranty service if you wish.

A retailer's salespeople/front counter staff might not know about a consumer's warranty rights or a retailer's warranty obligations (not a valid excuse really but oh well) which is why you can always escalate any issues to their supervisor/manager who hopefully has a bit more sense in them (which is pretty much sums up my experience with MSY - first person who serves me says nope not an issue this is very normal then I ask their manager to check it out and it gets approved as a warranty return).

Edit: Samsung Australia have the SSD listed as a five year warranty. It might've been the 840 that had the 3 year warranty?

      • As I have recently sent one of my Samsung SSDs for warranty repair/replacement. Below is some info.

During the first year, the SSD probably will be okay.

After the first year, you will need to send the faulty SSD back yourself. You will most likely get a replacement drive (but could be refurbished one as well). In the event where they don't have the same model of SSD, they will replace it with the equivalent model.

For example, my Samsung 840 SSD was !@#!@#!@. Samsung no longer makes them so they replaced it with an 850 EVO model. The drive seems to be a new one. While I am happy to get a 850 EVO replacement, I think it is the right thing for Samsung to do. I suffered from the 840 SSD read slowdown bug for a long time with no firmware fix.

Like most SSDs, when they die, they simply just die. No warning. Samsung SSDs are no exception. It was a pain for me because I did lose some working files.

While Samsung SSDs tend to do well in reviews and benchmark tests. In real life, they are not that fast. I cannot feel them being faster.

        • For next time Who to claim a remedy from "The retailer can’t refuse to help you by sending you to the manufacturer or importer." — If your product/service is outside of the manufacturer's warranty period then it would be reasonable for the retailer to direct you to claiming a remedy from the manufacturer.

Retailers shouldn't be getting away with disregarding consumer rights and the more you enforce, the wiser retailers become and will begin complying (hopefully).

Downside of handing off a warranty claim to the retailer is that they might dawdle with sending it back to the manufacturer whereas if you send it off yourself it could probably be done faster (but you'll pay for shipping obviously instead of the retailer).

As for SSDs dying without warning… :( I've recently started to use Dropbox for important files that I need for uni. It's convenient and a functions as a minor backup.

Is it brand new? Kogan is well know for selling refurbished

    • +2

This would be brand new but would be imported stock from Hong Kong. So beware of warranty procedures… you'd be dealing with Kogan.

      • +9

that's right, would rather pay $10 extra to get it from MSY or Umart etc, warranty is a pain

  • what's the difference between this and the BW version for $25 more?

    • +1

MZ-75E250BW at $164 looks like the Australian model with "5 Years Warranty".

These are also AUD$139 (after shipping and USD -> AUD conversion) at Amazon. I rather give my money to Amazon than these mobs.
