18 Month Parmigiano-Reggiano (Parmesan) $2 (75% off) @ Woolworths (200g Wedge Equiv $10/Kg)

780

Was shopping at woolworth looking for some Parmesan cheese for making some cabonara pasta and came across the Woolworth Gold brand Parmesan cheese at a massive discount. A 200g wedge of Italian imported cheese for only $2.
This is the best price I've seen for any Parmigiano-Reggiano ever. It works out to be $10/kg, where Parmesan cheese blocks usually costs $25-50+.

I have seen this special at several Woolworth stores in Melbourne already, and I am assuming this Victoria wide, if not nation-wide.
I've stocked up on a few blocks of this and other cheese (see below)

For anyone who care, this is the authentic Italian stuff since it has the 'Protected Designation of Origin' logo on it.
As for the taste, i am not Parmesan connoisseur, but it tasted fine. The only down side is the expire date for this being some time in July (can vary on the different wedges).

This maybe a continuation of a previously expired deal. https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/192676

In addition, there are several other varieties of Italian hard cheese from the Woolworth Gold brand on sale.

30 month Parmigiano-Reggiano 200g wedge $6 (was $12)*
20 month Grana Padano 200g wedge $4 (was $10 i think)*
18 month Parmigiano-Reggiano 150g small pieces $3 (was $6)

  • These two cheese comes in paper wrapping with woolworth branding, however, on the inside, it is original Italian brand underneath

    Good find OP. Thanks

Tried to buy 3 kg of this cheese but told to buy more items. This is a con job anyway as the cheese use by date expires shortly.
Be very very careful with these offers.

    18 months ?

    • +3

18 month means it is aged for 18 month before being cut up for sale. I theory, the longer it is aged, the better it tastes (and pricier it is).

  • Is this deal online only or in store?

  • I think it may be nation wide - found it in my local Woolies last week!

  • Low code, my 3 had 5th of July when I used my 10 off 30 code last week.

    • +1

Parmigiano-Reggiano is the only cheese that can be called parmesan in Europe

      • +1

I m italian ,you can call Parmesan if you like, but the real nane is Parmigiano Reggiano and it s only D.O.P and product I. italy.,the others signed Parmesan are 100% fakes .Look on internet and you can find that the brand Parmesan was suited. Please guys before put negative vote and talking about education you should more focused.Wikipedia is not the holy Bible.

The Woolworths product in this post is called Parmigiano Regino by the store and on the packaging. Whatever it might be, I think you can take it as given that this isn't a mistake and the product is NOT Parmigiano Reggiano, ie. genuine Parmesan. Bon appetit.. :-) .. !!

has the 'Protected Designation of Origin' logo on it.

    • So the title should be altered to reflect that.

I bought 2kg (10 wedges) of it at the last deal, the WW staff ended up tossing several of the 30mth ones in by mistake. Now it's all shortdated BUT it freezes very well and I tend to use it straight from the freezer as it even tends to grate a tad better as it's so hard from being frozen.

Just make sure that once opened you store it in a very air tight bag to ensure no (or atleast minimal flavour loss).

Absolute bargain at this price and good quality parmesan like this elevates even a basic dish into something a tad more spesh - no excuses for not stocking the freezer on this one.

    • Thanks for the freezer tip!

  • Which section is this in?

  • Thanks OP great deal. $2 here in SA too I shall be stocking up!

I might try this recipe, i've been looking for some tasty water!

Freeze it and it'll be good.
But for awesome carbonara try using pecorino
. My Woolworths doesn't sell it so I have to go to Coles instead. Flavour is much more intense and delicious so you don't have to use as much too!

    • Depends on the type of pecorino. It is a nice cheeseboard style when it is young then becomes firmer and dries as it gets older. The latter is better for pasta topping.

Curious that the 20 month Grana Padano isn't marked Grana Padano oltre 16 mesi (greater than 16 months).

No $2 ones at my local, only the $4 and $6 ones. :(

  • Didn't see any of the wedges at my local in WA. They had it very thickly shaved/chopped for $3/200g in plastic containers. Pretty inconvenient because it's not finely shaved enough to sprinkle, yet the pieces are too small to hold and grate further…..grumble grumble grumble

maybe they thought you'd be grateful

I bought 5 on the 24th May and took a photo to show at the registers in case it was a mistake, I did not post the deal as though short expiry was not that good however I have since heard that does freezes well. It is located in the deli section with the salami's and gourmet cheeses etc, so not the normal cheese section. Here is a photo http://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/122664/30924/img_5614.g…

Just got a couple from the Brisbane City store, still a few there. No sale signs, just scanned at the register and it came up as $2. Good deal, thanks OP

  • Bought a couple of these. Best before July 2015.

On the back of the packet it states not suitable for freezing. I'm not sure why but if you are planning on buying a lot to freeze you may want clarify why they don't recommend freezing.

  • I'm not sure why this was marked as expired. Still available at my local store until close of business tonight. (Blackburn South, VIC).

I'm glad I stopped by after work. Grabbed two. Thanks OP!

    • They're not supposed to expire until July

The only down side is the expire date for this being some time in July

      • Sorry, I was referring to the OzBagain deal not the Best Before of the cheese

At the time I posted the deal had been marked as expired. I reported it and the mods fixed it. Thanks.

    • all now $3 except macro $2 :)
