Buffet with Large Varieties Like China Bar Signature (Melbourne) in Sydney

I go to China Bar every time I go to Melbourne, I have yet to find similar sort of offerings in Sydney, please let me know if you do.

  • People who live in Sydney do not take the Melbourne - Sydney rivalry seriously, and I am concerned that any suggestion will draw fire from those who do.
Now, having got that off my chest, I have had just had a look at China Bar Signature on line, and it seems to be quite ok. I have never been there. Bravely, I will say that there are a number of large hotels in Sydney that present a good buffet, and the Star's Garden Buffet restaurant on a good night can be ok also. It would be rare for a buffet restaurant to offer the sheer number of dishes that China Bar Signature offers. Have a look at the offerings of Sydney's five and four star hotels. Sydney has some very good hotel restaurants. It is difficult to compare restaurants fairly. There are also buffet vegetarian restaurants in Sydney, as in all you can eat, such as the Green Gourmet and others. If my response draws a lot of fire, then my initial suspicion was correct, and the intent was to justify a flame war. Sydney also has some very good restaurants that are not buffet style, such as the Aria group, and The Quay, and some great coffee. The Royal Fine Food Show judges have better palates than mine.

The hotels in Sydney don't cut it, they may will charge double but with barely half the varieties (or not even close).

The thing with buffet is that many places offer a load of crap food, very seldom you find one with quality food, China Bar is one of the few.

    • Yep, we were there 3 weeks ago. Does not compare, $55 each and they still charged us $2 for wire mesh, WTF?! China Bar is $59, about triple the choice.

  • Sizzler??

    • Sizzler < RSL < Hotels < China Bar.

  • Your dismissive line "The hotels in Sydney don't cut it" says it all. This is an example of a rant! Rant away! It is normal for food quality to suffer once the volume is increased. Fine food and buffet normally do not go together. The Mandarin Restaurant in George Street Sydney during the 1960's was an example of a restaurant that had a menu the size of "Gone With the Wind", and everything was done to perfection by regional chefs out here on 6 month visas. Such examples are uncommon. There is a reason that the better restaurants do not do buffet as a rule, and food waste is only part of the story. It is not possible to penetrate the closed belief system of a ranter, and anyone who responds is wasting their time. Quality dishes are not appreciated by the majority of buffet restaurant eaters, in any case, I would not call them diners.

    • Probably unfair to say "hotels in Sydney" as I only been to a handful, most costly I remember was Sheraton on the Park, very poor value for money in comparison. Then again it's hotel vs restaurants.

If you haven't to been to China Bar, I would highly recommend you try it out.

  • Looks like you don't have a China Bar in Melbourne to go to, not for a while at least.
