2 in 1 Laptop Suggestions

Hey guys,

Was looking to sell my Macbook Air 2014 model and was wondering what a better replacement would be. So far I have picked out the following:

Microsoft Surface Pro 3 i5
Asus Transformer T300
Lenovo Yoga 3 14"
HP Envy X2 13T.

Any suggestions or previous experience on the models shown would be greatly appreciated! Thanks

Surface pro 3. Costs a bomb, but an absolute pleasure to use, especially with the type cover, stylus and the freely adjustable kick stand that doesn't force you to use it in specified angles.

    • How is it on the lap with the type cover? Would seem pretty awkward to use ie. on a couch or bus.

      • You have to keep your legs level. If they are not then the keyboard becomes wobbly.

Another thing to take note for lap use is that the kickstand extended, and with the keyboard attached, is that it will take up a bit of 'legroom'.

It'll look a bit like this.

Using it for a while, you might find the device top-heavy. So if you cross your legs while using it on the lap, this will happen. That's because all the weight is in the tablet and not the keyboard.

        • Ahhh okay. Doesn't seem to be that bad. Will have a look more into it. I'm also entitled to the 10% discount from the Microsoft store so I might try and price match at JB (if they're willing)

  • Do you have a tablet/want a tablet?

Surface Pro seems like a great product if you need portability. It can be used as a tablet, is touch screen, and you can write/draw in it quite well. If these things will be of use then Surface would be great for you.

If you really only need a laptop then perhaps you may be better of saving some money or spending it on a better spec laptop?

    • I have an iPad that im also going to sell to fund this. iOS 8 runs a tad laggy on the first gen mini. Portability for me plays a huge factor. Wouldn't want to be hauling around a 2KG+ laptop around on top of text books.

      • ok. you can still get light laptops (ultrabooks) but if you still want something that would function as a tablet than I think surface is a great choice.

  • Dell has a few different models as well, ( actually Lenovo has a few models as well, i really like the yoga 3 pro).

Dell outlet has them every now and then pretty cheap.

    • The 13" 7000 looks pretty solid. Have you had any experiences with it? Also, would I be able to swap the HDD to an SSD?

      • no but if you go to JB they have them (well they used to).
they are not sealed so you can put a ssd in.

  • the surface pro 3 is meant to be great and if you use adoble light room (maybe other adobe stuff) it changes function whether you are in tablet or pc mode automatically, it doesnt do it with any other 2in1. really cool.

  • i also think the HP spectre x360 looks mighty good, good battery, lightweight, ssd.

these (dell yogaa, spectre ) are 2in1 that fold over to be a tablet, surface etc can just be a tablet if you remove the keyboard.

    • I'm probably leaning towards something like this (foldable). I find it better than having to constantly attach a separate keyboard

      • my thoughts too. you will be using as a normal laptop mostly so want proper keys etc.
then fold over to tablet more likely when relaxing/ cruising ozbargain etc.

the spectre looks really good but may be a bit expensive.

      • The thing to consider about using it as a tablet is the weight- it's 1.48kg. See if you can play around with it in stores? I've found holding 2-in-1 laptops like that waaay too heavy for my liking

  • I have an SP3 for sale in the classifieds at a hefty discount icymi

    • so do you think they are really more a tablet than a laptop?

  • Thanks Guys, I have decided to get the Dell Inspiron instead.
