How to Reduce Ping?

Live in WA, i have a NBN service with belong, per speedtest.net download speed is about 5-6Mb which is lower then the promised 12Mb plan but still good enough, however the Ping is around 115ms which is a bit high when playing online games (dota2).
Tried to change the DNS setting to google public DNS but does not help at all. Just would like to know if this is normal and is there any way to reduce the ping? do i need to change ISP? thanks!

  • Call Belong i think cause that is terrible.
I live in Penrith NSW with NBN I get 10-11 MB download on the 12/1 speed and 4-10 ping

    Take a look i am with Iprimus/

    • Thats awesome!

I thought mine was pretty bad too considering NBN should be much better then adsl.

Did call them but always the usual stuff, restart modem, reposition modem, all of which does not help.
tried to call them again recently but takes ages waiting to talk to somebody, so i gave up.

      Will call them again.
      Thanks!

Just checking, this is your speed and ping when connected via an Ethernet cable, not wifi?

    • tried both wifi and ethernet, only a slight difference. and since my nbn box is in the garage cant really use cable, tried plugging in LAN cable from nbn box to phone/data socket in the garage and then connect the modem/router to phone/data socket inside the house but doesnt seem to work :(. any suggestion?

  • DNS does not affect ping delay because once the domain name has been resolved to an IP address, the ping uses the address.

    • So what can i do?

      • If you can complete a trace route to the known server IP addresses, you can see along the route how latency changes as the issues might be with Belong's peering partners and nothing to do with them as an ISP.

You could request they investigate alternate peering partners to that network if it is a next or second service provider, but chances are unless the high latency is generated local to the ISP nothing can and will be done, so look for another DOTA server with lower latency.

        • Ping to aus server is ard 130ms and thats already the best

  • I'm in WA with NBN and signed up with Internode. Ping is about 4-8ms and I get the 40MB/s download and 20MB/s upload as per my package.

Router could be an issue. You should get it checked out.

  • 115ms ping is worse than adsl… When I was on adsl my ping was 20.
maybe your modem is broken? And router as well.

  • its faulty, call them and get it fixed.

  • I called them and when it is connected directly to the NBN box i was getting 11.5Mb download which is really close to the promised speed. but the ping remains the same. once i go back to wifi im back to 4-5 Mb so yeah will ask the to maybe give me new modem.

    thanks for the suggestions.

    • sounds definetly like the modem My speed test i posted earlier for you was over wifi.

  • Are you testing with an Au server or an overseas one? The load of the server can also be the reason as already suggested.

I have NBN 25mpbs and ping is 10 ms pinging my capital city servers, top download. However, when I test with overseas servers, especially Europe, ping grows to 400ms and download drops to 1mbps. It is better with Sing servers, i.e. 145 ms ping and 8mbps download. The best downloads I have seen from overseas "single server" were 40mbps (different provider) from US servers.

The more routers you have on your way to destination the higher the ping. So you can work with your provider to try to optimize this.

  • It could be anything from a crappy router, to crappy wiring in the house, to a crappy connection to the exchange, to just a crap service provider. but you should not be using wifi any ways if latency is a major concern.
