90

For those unfamiliar, DCS World is an F2P flight sim that offers medium to high fidelity aircraft through paid modules. It already comes with a free aircraft, the SU25T, so you dont have to purchase anything to play.

Copied from the newsletter email:

  • Which modules do you feel offer the best value? Any good co-op modules?

You obviously want Flaming Cliffs 3 first, as it has the most content (technically 7 planes, though the Su-33/Su-27 and MiG-29S/29A are largely interchangeable; and has ultra-realistic simulations for the Su-25 and A-10A) and is basically the "base module" which you'll need to run a lot of the other content. The editor is also fully-featured in FC3 with all of the land, air and sea assets you need to create true, combined arms warfare missions.

The other DCS modules are the individual, meticulously-detailed, every-button-working-in-the-cockpit, ultra-realistic simulation modules (AFM - Advanced Flight Model); which are definitely not intended for quick, 15-minute A2A battles with some bots.

  • ^ This. FC3 will start you off with a lesser learning curve, so its great for those starting out or new to flight sims. Cant say about the online experience as I myself am still learning, doing practice missions in mission editor.

  • What do the games have in the way of campaigns and pre-made mission? Flaming Cliffs 3 and Mig21 seem to have campaigns included from the description, and there is the Su-27 The Ultimate Argument Campaign for purchase. But most of the other modules appear to be just insert a flyable aircraft or helicopter into the DCS World environment.

Do Steam versions come with activation keys you can use to activate modules downloaded from DCS World (non-Steam versions)?

    • Can't answer about the missions..

Steam versions come with an activation key that can be used in the standalone installer. Keys bought from the DCS estore cannot be activated on steam (as this would cost them money). The upside is that the standalone installer gets updates quicker than the steam version. Also, you bind the keys to your account on the DCS website.
