Dell Vostro Graphics Driver Issue with Samsung EVO SSD

Hi all,
I have Dell Vostro 410 pc with dual monitors (Dell 24 and Samsung 20). I have installed Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 as dual boot on original hard drive without any issues. From recent deal I bought 500 GB Samsung EVO SSD and tried to install clean Windows 8.1.

When I install Windows 8 and updates every thing is fine. Windows automatically install drivers and recognise dual monitors with proper resolution of both the monitors. But as soon as I upgrade to Windows 8.1 , windows stop recognising Dell monitor and resolution for Samsung monitor is lowered from 1600 X900 to 1280 X 800 (approx.). Basically same screen on both the monitors.
I tried to install drivers from Dell CD, but then the screen goes black for ATI graphics driver and nothing happens for hours and even after restarting. I tried with both 32 bit and 64 bit windows but same outcome. I got error message for Realtek sound and black screen for ATI graphics driver. Sound is ok.

Can you please advise if it has to do something with SSD or I am missing something?

  • From Computer Managemenet, find your monitor, try to rollback driver.

  • If you manange to get a display on safe mode, means that it is a driver issue. You need to roll back driver.

  • But it is basic windows driver now. If I try to install dell drivers then it crashes and black screen comes. I have installed windows now 3 times on ssd without proper screen Resolution success. Otherwise windows is fine.

  • Thanks all. I resolved the issue. The drivers in CD was giving error, so I downloaded updated version from (http://support.amd.com/en-us/kb-articles/Pages/latest-cataly…). It worked and now all good.

  • 1> Graphics driver will have nothing to do with SSD.
2> ALWAYS grab the latest driver when installing graphics cards. I see you've done this but I'm surprised you even tried the CD ones considering the CD was probably pressed way before Win8.1 came out.

    • +1

CD drivers are for Win XP and win Vista. I used the same cd drivers for Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 on normal hard drive. That was surprise for me - why it worked for hard drive previously. I even double checked the drivers for windows 8.1 and Win 10 and they are same and installed from cd.
There are few articles on issues with drivers on ssd and AMD has released these new catalyst drivers for Win 8 and ssd.
Not sure why it worked before but it ultimately sorted out and that is important at this stage.
