In Australia "picaninny" is considered a racist, derogatory word.
Pikanini is the Bislama term for 'little one' and is derived from Pidgen English. It is still used in many South Pacific nations as part of their spoken language.
I have a connection with Vanuatu and chose the name 'Pikanini' for the brand to honour their language and educate people of the true and current meaning of the word. It is unfortunate that it was used a derogatory term in Western nations in the past and is still referred to this in Wikipedia (the source for many people who google the term 'pikanini') however it still has meaning in many countries around the world and I believe we should respect their spoken language and give power to the true meaning.
I think people of Aboriginal descent, whom the term was used to deride in their own country, where this forum is based, may not agree with you here. Years ago the Pancakes on the Rocks franchise had to remove a dish from their menu called "Picaninny Dawn".
I see you have a personal reason for choosing the name, that's fine, just be aware other people may have personal reasons for disliking it.

Thanks for bringing this up woolfenstein. I think it's important to discuss, especially as the past and present uses of the term differ greatly.
There are many languages which derived from Pidgin English, including one based in Australia which is still used by Aboriginal communities today. Although the origins of these languages (including Bislama, where the term 'pikanini' is used) is primarily from 'white' settlement/invasion, the languages are now used as a respected form of communication amongst the people today.
I understood that there would be people who were not familiar with the verbal use of the term 'pikanini' and had to use internet resources to research the meaning. I'm glad people are doing this as it creates a discussion about the positive and current use of the word all across the world.
However, my concern would be for people who are personally offended by the use of the term as it was used negatively against them in the past.@lemc6125: I don't think you can argue it has any sort of current positive use in Australia (unless you're counting yourself attempting to start a business with it). If it WAS acceptable, there wouldn't have been such an uproar only 2 years ago.
"I understood that there would be people who were not familiar with the verbal use of the term 'pikanini' and had to use internet resources to research the meaning" - do not be so patronising, I learnt this word and it's shame from my parents. Young people do not know the meaning of this word because its use wasn't socially acceptable and was near stamped out. Pickaninny is the "nigger" that died.
You may want to put your url where you uploaded the picture.
And… your website isn't really user friendly. Can't read the menu items when some of those photos move.
