Need Help for The Good Guys Discounts

Dear the informed OzBargain Community,
I am a student and my old computer has just died. I am not going to repair it as it will cost me a minimum of $400. Therefore, i am going ot buy a new laptop. The laptop that i am planning on buying is the HP ENVY Notebook - 15-k232tx (Modern Silver). I see the GoodGuys has this for $1146 which is far cheaper than from HP themselves. None of the other major retailers seem to have this computer. I was just wondering if anyone knows how i could get some discount on my purchase. I am already going to take advantage of the TRS (Tourist Refund Scheme) which is %10 discount. Any discounts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance,
Kind Regards,
Bargain Muncher

          Are you serious?!!!!

          @bargainmuncher:
Of course Im kidding…the most they will just reject your claim…

Or do they?….tax evasion is serious sh!t…

        • @KaTst3R: Why would they reject the claim? You are allowed to combine TRS amounts with people you are travelling with. Most flyers seem to travel with everyone else on the plane :)

        • Interesting to know. A year back I claimed TRS for my DSLR I bought for my brother and they didn't even check the item. They asked me to drop the application in the drop box and the money was credited in my account in 2 days.

    • If you are aged 18 years or over, you can bring in up to A$900 worth of general goods into Australia duty-free, or A$450 if you are younger than 18.

I hope he's not coming back alone lol

If the total value of the goods you are bringing in is greater than your Passenger Concession, including goods for which you have previously claimed a tax refund under TRS:

      • you must declare all of these goods
      • for goods where you have previously claimed a tax refund under TRS, you will need to pay that refund back
      • duty and tax will apply to all items of this type, not just goods over the limit of your passenger concession.

Penalties may apply if you don’t declare that you have goods in excess of your concession.

Once you get your laptop could you please write a review. seems like a pretty good laptop for the price. Bought a HP laptop myself and was not too impressed with the built quality.

  • I am somewhat drawn in by these threads that start out well and end up in a mess. Cue the hilarity, rage and tears :)

My strategy buy the TGG laptop then keep looking for 30 days for something cheaper. Bargain the TGG laptop down as much as you can though first.

    Hi OP,

If you're buying a laptop for school, you probably don't need to spend $1,000. If you're looking to be rich in the future, one of the best way you can do that is by saving money and not spending it on things that you don't need.

What kind of things do you expect to do with it? For example:

    • Web surfing
    • Word processing
    • Learning to program
    • Graphic design (i.e. Photoshop)
    • Gaming

If you just plan on doing the first three, almost any modern laptop will suffice. I'd recommend a Windows machine, so you can run Office, because practically speaking, that's what most people will be using. If you want to use something like Photoshop, you'll need a little more power. If it's gaming that you're interested in, then it's not really a laptop for school. :)

For school, I would suggest a light laptop, with good battery - maybe something like a 13 - 14 inch. These things can get heavy if you take them to and from school each day, especially if you have heavy text books in your bag already. If you have a good battery, you might be able to leave your charger at home, which means you can carry a little less too. It sounds silly, but it will be good for your back, especially if you walk to school.

Another thing to keep in mind, if that if it's a school computer, someone could spill something on it, it can get knocked around and it could get stolen.

It might be worth looking at a Lenovo when they have some good deals. They have a sale on now.

I recommend this too. Do not bring a 15" incher to school. It will be heavy, it will be awkward to carry, the battery life will not be particularly great and if you drop it that's $1100 of equipment down the drain. Are you sure that you want to commute on public transport with a $1k laptop everyday?

I used to work for a school and I know students… actually, no, even teachers, do not look after their equipment and the laptops get trashed easily. Thankfully the laptops are purchased via school connections, have a volume discount and have Accidental Damage Prevention via Dell, so they get repaired free of charge.

If you want to game, get yourself a $600 gaming machine (e.g Dell Alieware Alpha, $599 for i3 + 860m graphics) and use the remainder $400 to either get yourself a Hp Stream 11 or some other lightweight basic laptop that comes with Office 365 bundled. It'll be great for students.

can i have your old computer?

    Thanks

For $1200 I'd want a full HD screen, 1366x768 is no good for gaming (it's quite apparent this isn't going to just be a "school" laptop, you're not fooling anyone).

When I was growing up (oh god I feel old now!), if my computer died..shock horror i'd fix it. Purchase a new computer? Ha! Asking for a new computer from my folks would have been the equivalent to a 14yo asking if he could get hookers for his birthday!

What's actually wrong with your computer? Perhaps we can help you get it up and running so you can get back to your 'school work'.
