Hi all, bad start to the day. Scraped the front bumper of my car against a pole in the car park. The paintwork on the bumper and just where it meets the body has come off.
I have comprehensive car insurance. Is it worth going through the insurance or get it repaired privately?

If I remember correctly, my excess should be $625. Hopefully, I should be able to get the quotes for repair this week.

Accidents happen. If it's just a respray of the bumper that's needed it'll definitely be cheaper to do it privately. Comp insurance is great for big accidents, theft, writeoff etc but it's not good value for small scrapes and bumps (premium rises for small claims can be really big and long lasting).
I've had good success with a company called Scratch Busters - they came to my house and repainted the bumper - looks good as new. Was around $400 to get a scrape the size of a soccer ball repainted. You can even get a quote by just sending them a photo of the scratch :)
Try places like bumpertech or touch up guys they will come to you and they do free quotes.

It happened at the station car park. Told the staff that I scraped the light pole. They looked bemused to hear it.

Get a few quotes and compare to your insurance excess. Don't accept the first quote that comes along.
You're probably better off getting repaired privately, I had to pay about $1k privately for a new rear bumper and respray, but nothing on the body had to be done.
I had a minor at fault about 2 years ago, it's added about $150-200 to my yearly premium for each of the last two years. I hit a third party so didn't have the option of sorting repairs privately.
