21st Birthday Purchasing Alcohol Help!

Hello everyone! In about a months time is my boyfriend's 21st and me and him were planning together. We are looking for the most frugal way to supply alcohol for the event.

eg. Discount stores, bargaining with stores or anywhere you guys know where to get it.

Some facts:

  • There's about ~80 people attending
  • Most people will be around 19-24 (with some parents)
  • It will be held in a function room
  • Need to pick decide on beer, red wine and sparkling/white wine (thinking of moscato)
  • Victoria

I was wondering on what you guys think about the quantity and also the cheapest way to purchase(no need to be the best brands since young adults aren't picky yet).

Some popular recommendations I have heard are:

  • Go to Dan Murphys and try and get a deal on bulk.
  • Talk to your local pubs about kegs etc.

Thank you :)

Ahh one rule when throwing a party.. BYO Alcohol

      Definitely this.

Write: BYO alcohol (with limited beer/wine provided).

That will offset some of the alcohol from people bringing their own.

    Try Aldi.

forget kegs. too hard, too slow, too much wastage…. and not that economical.
    Keg as a gimmick only.

scan catalogs for BWS, Liquorland, etc buy beer specials or go to Dans/1st choice.

cleanskin wines will most likely do - at the end of they day not many 19-24yo's are connoisseurs.

quantity question is subjective, eg, if your mates are 'in the footy club', then budget 10 beers each, if they are in the chess club budget 1 beer each.
only you will know the answer to this.

If you buy wine from DM's, any unopened, good conditioned bottles of wine can be returned for cash.

Last time I organised a 21st, Vintages Cellars had a policy that if you ordered by the carton, you could return any unopened cartons. We weren't sure how many people would drink wine vs beer, so we ordered heaps of each. We ended up drinking most of the beer, but returned about 3/4 of the red wine and 1/2 of the white. Without the return policy we either would have bought less and ended up running out of beer, or been stuck with 50 bottles of wine.

They also offered free wine and beer glass rental if you ordered a minimum amount. We had it in a church hall, so needed to supply our own glasses. I think that saved more than $100.

Dan Murphys has a drink estimator: https://www.danmurphys.com.au/guides/party-planner

It's been a few years since so things might have changed. Call up a few places and see what they offer.

I had a similar do not long ago and worked out how many would be beer/wine drinkers first.

I allocated 8 beers per beer drinker and a bottle of wine for each wine drinker and just rounded it up a little.

Worked out pretty spot on. What was left over we took home, which couldn't be done with kegs.

Free beer has few critics, my guests lucked out with imported thanks to this deal, but any reasonably popular brew on special will do the trick.

Moscato was the big wine, with a mixed case of Sauv Blanc/Cab Merlot/Sparkling catering for the others.

If you do go Dan Murphy's/Woolworths and you're an entertainment member, order gift cards for an extra 5% off.

  • Victoria always have cheap alcohol deals! :(

  • Should have thought about it *with more than a month *to go and you could have had someone home brew for you ;)

Wine/Sparkling - you should be able to pick up some drinkable stuff cleanskin or from a wine Auction.

Beer - just keep your eyes peeled for a good sale price on some of the budget imported brands like Oettinger (Woolies) or Henninger (Coles). You're not going to beat $30/carton like they can get down to and the beer is good enough to keep everyone happy, from the craft beer enthusiasts down to the "VB is the only beer I'll buy" drinkers..

visit the website http://boozle.com.au/ . It will show most registered deals and link you to the page.
i just find the cheapest product and go to dan murphys or 1st choice and they beat that price.

  • Thank you so much for all of these suggestions. I will pursue each avenue and see how cheap I can get it but so far Dan Murphies seems the way to go
