Cost to get new toilets installed--- $300 in labour cost, average??

Hi guys,

I'm getting 3 new toilets installed in my new home and the plumber has quoted me $300 in installation costs (not including cost of toilet suite itself).

That's $300 X 3 = $900 dollars in labour costs. Is this typical pricing for plumbing work? He has also insisted we splurge on the costlier models ($350 instead of $160) so that the toilets do not stain or turn black like the current ones have. Hmmm. Shonky trader or honest opinion?

I'm not a plumber, but that certainly does not sound excessive to me. In fact, a labour-charge of under $1000 to install three toilets is less than I'd expect to be quoted, to be honest!

Seems expensive, get some more quotes to get a better idea of costs for labour.

  • It's not just the toilet suites themselves involved though with a new construction - there's all the piping etc. If the $300 each is inclusive of that, it may be on the high side, but isn't unreasonable. If that's all in place, and he's literally just installing them, I'd be looking for another plumber. Hubby totally replaced ours and the entire job was considerably less than a couple of hours all up.

Is he supplying the toilets or are you sourcing them yourselves?

    • He's supplying them. I don't think there will be any piping involved — just the replacement of three toilet bowls and the cisterns.

I watched a few youtube vids and this guy made it seem easy enough but since the video was filmed in the US i am not entirely sure if the process will also apply to toilets made here — could be different in construction.

That's about all there is to it. Instead of the wax though, ours had a cement product of some type which had to be chipped around before attempting to loosen the toilet bowl, to prevent any cracking of the surrounding tiles. That was about the most time consuming part of it. One thing to consider is that the footprint of the new one may not be the same size as the previous one, so I'd be checking with him what the story is if that's the case … maybe he's taking that into account with his quote, who knows.

You'd probably be far better off cost-wise buying the toilets yourself, but that's entirely your choice. At $300 each to simply replace, my feeling is he's ripping you off. It really isn't a difficult or time consuming job.

I guess they have insurance costs etc though, and at $300 a pop I'd be making sure that included disposal of the old ones.

  • A few jobs ago i worked for a large Plumbing Co.

Found that if you want a lower price be prepared to get some prices off guys in western sydney,
i'm guessing you are around Epping way by that Sydney Water link.

Just do it before September as things go crazy coming up to Xmas.

So many plumbers in Sydney plenty of choice, just google to see if they have a bad rep.

    have you tried www.serviceseeking.com.au?
give it a go, you might found some cheap quotes.

personally I have used that site a few times over the last 3 or 4 years, got jobs nicely done for reasonable price. eg, around $680 to install a split system AC (note that includes adding a switch on power main, 6 meter long piper to backyard. also installed auto garage door for $340ish (includes the Merlin motor).

basically you have nothing to lose to give it a shot

  • Try Hipages.com.au. You will get a few quotes and then you can compare

  • If it's a basic remove and replace what about a handyman ..much cheaper hourly rate…Try oneflare

    • correct, dont need a plumber as their is no piping to be done. Purchase the toilets yourself and call out a few handymen to give you a quote to install.
