Can I Bring Dried Mushrooms, Truffle Flakes or Hard Cheese Back to Australia?

Providing that I declare it all, are sealed packets of truffle flakes, dried mushrooms or hard cheese allowed to be brought to Australia?

If they're packaged and sealed with a proper branding. I dont see why not? Just declare it.

I'm pretty sure dairy products can't come in. I had mooncake filled with cheese (not even 100% cheese) and they took them away. But you definitely won't be fined.

When was that? There's been recent changes where even mooncakes with yolk are allowed in. This was specifically mentioned by the Customs officer when I arrived in Perth airport about 2 years ago. So times may have changed.

EDIT : I found this link.

      • ow?????????? it was few years ago. It wasn't even the traditional mooncake with yolks, it was Indonesian type mooncake which really just like pastry with some cheese paste in there. The chocolate was fine, but they took the cheese away after they cut to confirm.

Thanks for the link! Never knew the yolk one is good to come now :) Will bring the black bean with yolk in next time :)

Declare it and the worst that will happen is they discard it.

Some cheese, depending on origin, is no good.

Some mushroom such as Monkey Head are no good.

    Truffle flakes should be ok.

I thought most of the agricultural goods were no good because of the chance of them carrying foreign diseases or something.
Not sure though, I am almost certain that you cannot bring any meat products whatsoever.

Contact Biosecurity Australia (quarantine) as they are the authorities on this matter.

  • Good luck trying to find out on the customs website with their dead freakin' link on this question.

  • dried mushrooms are fine, as long as they are sealed, customs to usually shake the bag to see if any bugs fall out

not sure about cheese, but my in laws took home soft cheese once, and customs said it was fine, as it was sealed, dunno how that works, normally no dairy

    Times may have changed but,
in 1984 I took a Qantas flight from Singapore to Darwin. As I still had a 2 hour lay-over in Darwin airport(and a dinkum OZBargainer) I kept the Qantas served cheese and biscuit(still sealed) for my snacks while waiting for the connecting flight.
The cheese and biscuits were confiscated by quarantine inspite my protestations that it was Australian made cheese and biscuits from the airline.

Better get a good reference from the govt website on the specific item that you're planning to bring in. The customs officer can sometimes be clueless on some uncommon items, happened to me once, they wanted to shove my items in the bin, then I showed them that they are actually permittable and eventually they let me take them in.

You have to have specific info on the country of origin though, could be detrimental whether it's allowed or not.

From the dept of agriculture website:
    http://www.agriculture.gov.au/travelling/cant-bring-form/aus…

    Dairy items
Dairy items (including cheese) are allowed into Australia if the product is:

Manufactured in one of the countries specified on the Department of Agriculture Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) Approved Country List
    Commercially prepared and packaged
    Intended for human consumption only
Imported in an amount up to 10 kilograms (solid), 10 litres or 2 kilograms (dried).

For mushrooms and truffles, it will depend on the species and country of origin. Search here: http://apps.daff.gov.au/icon32/asp/ex_querycontent.asp

    • Thanks for the links. I never even thought about looking at the Agriculture web site. I was searching customs and quarrantine to look. I was looking at buying cheese online from France, as they have a great online store that ships here, ans was actually recommended by a web site here, but I couldn't find anything regarding if it was OK. Fromages.com. I contacted the Aus web site that was promoting it to see if they had actually used it, but they never responded.

  • Thank you so much all!!!
