    I wouldn't trust downloading & installing a 'free' application called C.I.A.

    • Its normally not a Free application, but love your imagination.

have u tried waveapps? cloud based..

either way most free apps wont make things easy when it comes to your tax time.

      I work in bookkeeping.

      My honest suggestions:
      - Unless you're going to use the billing software to its full, avoid MYOB.
      - Quikbooks is great for bookkeepers to use, and not great for laypeople to use.
      - I personally think Crave is arse because it doesn't let you do payroll through timesheets.

For a simple to use and great software, try Xero.

      • or just use Spreadsheets…

A lot of people don't understand money. That's just the truth.

Spreadsheets don't create reports or analysis for you, and they don't have bank feeds either.

Why do you use toilet paper jv, just use your hand.

        • @smileymiwo:
totally agreed, but the last sentence is not a good analogy.

        • @dustynn:

Maybe we should be using our tongues to lick it clean instead? Then we don't even need to spend on water.

          @smileymiwo:

Spreadsheets don't create reports or analysis for you

They can do anything you want them to do…

No they don't do bank feeds directly, but it's not that hard to fully automate the bank transaction log and import into you application…

        • @jv:

You still need someone to prepare the spreadsheet templates for you and at that point you might as well use a free bookkeeping software.

Excel also does not allow you to lodge a lot of compliance, and you have to manually fill out the paperwork.

        • @smileymiwo:

You still need someone to prepare the spreadsheet templates for you

          No I don't. I do it myself.

Excel also does not allow you to lodge a lot of compliance

You can do that on the ATO portal.

        • @jv:

Again, a lot of people don't know much about money or Excel.

To say that they should go off and use it without knowledge is moot.

        • @smileymiwo:

To say that they should go off and use it without knowledge is moot.

Where did I say they should ?

It is an option for those who have advanced spreadsheet skills.
Probably easier than using a packaged system if you know what you want to do…

        • @jv:

Why do you ever open your mouth?

The original comment you replied to clearly said
"For a simple to use and great software"

Not sure if you have some sort of disability but most people could probably infer from that statement that people who would heed the advice probably don't have advanced spreadsheet skills.

        • @smileymiwo: Maybe he has a bidet, and does use his hand?

        • Excel is cool.

        • @Jackson:You are ill informed.
I have and use a bidet and if you use your hand you're doing it wrong

        • @Davros: I didn't know there was a bidet handbook. Hope it's waterproof

        • @Jackson: Why would it need to be? A bidet/bum gun is for your bum, not your hands or books.

        • @jv: And writing your own software is an option for those with advanced programming skills.
Also Excel is not free, unless you are suggesting an alternative free spreadsheet programme, though admittedly most people probably have Excel already.
Excel will never come close to a "good" commercial application (disclaimer - I have not tried the software in the post) unless you know a good deal about excel and accounting.

        • -2

@Davros: when you dry your bum you want to know there is nothing on it. Please walk us through the rest of your bum rituals so we may better understand you

        • -1

@Jackson: After hosing off with gun I wipe dry with paper, not my hand.

        • @Davros:Funny how we are both down voted. Such narrow mindedness.

Mind you, if you are drying off with paper, why not just wipe with the paper and skip the bum gun altogether?

        • @Jackson: Do I really have to explain it?
I use a bum gun and then wipe some water off with a small amount of paper
You use meters of paper to smear sh__ all around your date until it gets thin enough not to notice, but sh__ residue is still there.

Upside is a clean bum and a dozen rolls of TP lasts a long time in our household.
Downside is I feel dirty if I need a crap away from home in Australia.
Not an issue in other countries I visit as they mostly have a gun.

        • @Davros: You are very presumptuous. How do you know I don't also have a "bum gun"? Maybe I just think a small amount soap and a towel is a better option? Maybe using water alone it's you leaving shit residue, and maybe I think your small amount of paper could be saved using a different method?

I am still amazed we haven't been given the 'offtopic' treatment yet.

    • Have been using Wave for six months now and it's fantastic. No comparison to Xero features wise, but that's the point. Wave is filling a gap in the market for people that need something for basic account and invoicing, without all the other crap.

Of all the free cloud based accounting/invoicing services, Wave is the best by far. In fact, it's so good I would happily pay for it.

  • Thanks, OP— I'll give it a test-go, maybe this weekend if I can carve a bit of time.

I only really need basics like income, expenditures, mileage- so it might be good for my uses.

    Ta!

    • Yes, this will definitely help, as it did to me. Good Luck.

  • Isn't the major feature of most of these the fact that that you can lodge a BAS without writing it all out? Anyone know if this software does this?

    • No, it doesn't unfortunately.

      • There used to be a great piece of software developed in Melbourne for the ATO called erected, and very basic but supported the BAS and was provided free. For some reason it got axed, I still run it on am XP VM, still works but is a bit buggy now

  • For those needing BAS support, maybe check out this group:

    https://www.freeaccountingsoftware.com.au/

    Cheers

    • Looks promising, and but would feel better if it was locally hosted

  • +1

I use Gnucash (freeware) and host the datafiles on dropbox for the small non profit I keep track off, works well.

    http://gnucash.org/

In the past I have used Quickbooks Pro (Reckon) liked it and MYOB, loathed it.

  • PMJI. Talking about accounting packages…

I am looking for the CD for: Quickbooks Plus: Small Business Plus Payroll 2006/07.
I have a licence key, I just need a copy of the install CD.

Anyone have a copy? Please PM me.

  • I like Xero. Not free; there is a free trial.
    www.xero.com/au/

Australian version. It gets updated regularly, which is good!

    • Xero is best of all cheaper options available in the market atm for smaller businesses in Australia, no doubt about it. Crave Invoice is more of generalized Accounting software, I did emailed them yesterday if they are going to including few functionality which may be more relevant to AU/NZ, I already have their email saying that they will put into in their next version.
