Can I just say both cameras are actually pretty good (I used to work in a retailer). While the Sony does use the proprietary memory stick it's in my opinion a bit more stylish than the Canon. Canon have focussed their cameras on being easy to use.
All in all, both are very good, maybe give more info about the recipient.
I received the Canon 80IS last Christmas and I have been delighted with it. A cousin of mine who hates reading instructions received the same camera and created a screensaver of her own photos in the first week.
You can look up reviews with sample photos on a site like Steve's Digicams (Canon SD1100IS is the US model number for the 80IS).I have a sony t-series, and they take remarkable photos, i'ld recommend one to anyone!
Canon has a great reputation for Point and Shoot Cameras..
They also use the standardised SD card rather than Sony's proprietary (read, can only use in Sony devices and also more expensive) Memory Stick.
Read some reviews..
Google Camera model and review for a huge list of them.. pick reviews from the same site for an easy comparison.
