I keep worrying that if someone broke in and took my laptop, or if there was a fire, my last 10 years of existence would disappear (and I'd have no photos of my kids at all) :-/
So, now that I have unlimited internet…could someone please recommend a site (preferably free) that I could upload all my photos to so they are safe and sound forever, no matter what happens? Thank you :-)
p.s I know I can copy to hard drive..but same scenario as my laptop goes through my head
Flickr just released a new app, uploadr, for osx and windows, which can run in the background to upload your photos from specified directories or your iphoto collection.
I use Picasa because I like their desktop program, but I freely admit it's one of their products that Google probably doesn't really care about.
I usually prefer actual external hard drives for backups but if you like them being online, plenty of other options; Dropbox, Box, Skydrive, the ones mentioned before.
Google+ photos have unlimited storage up to a certain size, google has a backup tool to help you resize and upload your photos.

Just remember to read the terms and conditions of the free Google services.
I've read that by using the service you give them unlimited access to use your images in anyway they deem without compensation. I haven't read them recently to see if that's still accurate though, but was enough for me to move fully away from anything Google.

use google drive and / or onedrive, plus buy a cheap portable hard drive - copy the photos to the HDD and then put it somewhere (say parents home or just hidden in another bedroom)

Google Drive and Onedrive will offer you good storage options. Keep in mind that it will take a while to upload because Australian upload speeds are slow unless you have NBN or cable.
