Blue Nile and ZOARA usually provide "discount" on ring settings or wedding bands. Would encourage anyone who is looking to try "negotiating" with them via live chat. Getting them to knock off 10% is not too difficult.

    • Thanks! I've never bought from them, but came across Blue Nile because I'm shopping for wedding bands.

  • im a little confused with their system. I've had a few friends who's purchased from them before. one got slugged with gst by aus customs the other said they didn't have to pay tax at all. both were around 3,000…

GST will apply for all purchases from overseas.

I have bought local for a few reasons:
      1. Got the stone price matched to Zoara. Slightly more than what it cost online, but a peace of mind.
      2. Had images of the stone (including ideal scope), prior to purchasinh
      3. Much more convenient for resizing

I have likely paid $1000-$2000 premium to what I could have paid to online retailers. But this figure has diminished as I took the ring back for resizing, as well the upcoming free annual maintaince of the ring.

FYI I bought a loose stone from Zoara, no problems with authenticity/quality (verified by family friend jeweller who made the ring and an independent valuer for insurance) but agree with peace of mind comment since a stone can look great on paper but may not meet up to expectations in person. FedEx gave me a call to settle GST before it could clear customs.

Luckily the one I ordered looked fantastic and far cheaper than what I could source an equivalent stone for locally.

Be careful when they quote you AUD though; the charge comes through in USD so I got stung on credit card surcharge.

And try to avoid sellers like Michael Hill, Gregory and the like. They are pretty pricey for what you can buy.

Brands like Tiffany, and Cartier are more affordable than what people thinks. Can pick something up for $20K+.

Otherwise a diamond wholesaler (not retail shops) would be a good alternative option.

  • Just a warning - I bought off Blue Nile, which charged in AUD and got hit with 3% foreign transaction fees by Westpac for being a "foreign transaction", because the merchant is located overseas (even though the charges are in AUD). So best to use a card with no foreign transaction fees at all to be safe.
