Move SSD to New Laptop

I moved an SSD from an old Toshiba laptop to a new Toshiba laptop (I removed the 1TB drive from the new laptop and replaced it with the 256GB SSD). I fired it up and saw an error of no bootable device found. I went into the BIOS and changed it from UEFI to CSM and now the laptop boots in Windows 7… but then blue screens with 0x0000007B stop error.

I have the Windows 7 Home Premium DVD and ran a startup repair but it didn't find any issues. I can't run the upgrade option from the disc (to do a repair) due to this error:

The computer started using the Windows installation disc. Remove the installation disc and restart your computer so that Windows starts normally.

Any other ideas apart from doing a clean install? The laptop is for my dad and I'd rather keep apps and data.

  • You need to do a clean install.

you cant just move a hard drive from one computer to another.

    • I've done it before though with this same SSD. Moving it from a really old Lenovo to the old Toshiba worked fine, ie booted ok and I just updated the drivers.

  • 0x0000007B error seems to be an inaccessible boot device. Try the steps outlined here

    • Thanks - all ok now.

After some assistance from a knowledgable colleague and this article - https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/922976, we were able to resolve the blue screen… in the recovery console, we loaded the system hive and made the registry change as mentioned in the article.

  • I use Paragon Adaptive Restore - Easily resets the system drivers to check and load new hardware drivers. Works about 90% of the time, takes about 5 min to actually work then you need to install your correct drivers.

Follow this page for an overview/guide.

All else fails, just reinstall, pain in the rear but at least its all fresh!

    Good luck!
