Dick Smith Helping Hands with Magnifier $5.99 (Online Only - Click and Collect or + Shipping)

830

When I looked at the soldering station listed earlier, I saw this advertised on the side of the page and the price is cheaper than I have ever seen one of these things, even from Chinese eBay sellers. Dick Smith currently sells this item on their own eBay store for $8.99. They are about $12 from Jaycar.

$5.99 for C&C is a good deal. It might also come in handy as a cheapy to add to an order to get it over $50 so you can use the 10forme $10 off over $50 deal currently on.

          @monty.melb:

My local OW refused to price match due to different space-time constraints !!! :(

        • @jv:

you really are obsessed about Daleks.

  • +1

They are normally 14.95, the cheapest ive seen is 4.99, I bought one recently, they are much smaller than you think

So one needs to buy two, first one is to see the second one…

  • thanks OP I've always needed one but never got one till now

IMO these things are crap for soldering circuit boards. I much prefer to just slap the PBB directly onto the table/desk/bench.

    • Or carefully in a vice

If only Smith was missing in the title ;-)

Good for tinning wire ends before actual soldering in place.

    • +2

You need DS glasses if you need a magnifying glass and crocodile clips to hold a wire for tinning.

      • Sir, do you have 3 arms?

        • Something easily learnt over years of practice.
Like cracking an egg in one hand.

  • Random. I'd started looking for one of these.

    • Someone always does!

  • Oo always thought how handy one of these would be for work, soldering leads into terminals and doing pin connections on serial leads etc. I'll buy it myself and be a company man.

  • +1

Didn't know I needed one of these things until I saw it. Thanks OP. Will come in handy for some intricate crafts

  • I got one for $10 last year. They come in very handy for soldering jobs etc.

  • Would this be good for shaving my junk?

    • +5

Sure! Just clamp it with both clips, adjust magnifying glass so it's not blurry and you're all good to go

    • +2

you will need a more powerful magnifying glass. Probably the Hubble.

  • How big is the magnifying glass? Anyone know? Also is the magnifying glass made of glass or plastic?

    • Just picked mine up, its made of glass and it has a diameter of around 7cm

      • 👍 ordered one. Would be good and a bit extra safety as the Flux smoke doesn't flow in your eyes.

        • +2

correct, it goes around the glass and into your eyes.

  • I bet if i did a search for helping hands, most of the responses won't look like that.

I have one of these and I honestly couldn't recommend it. It's just a bit too cheapily made. I have to regularly re-crimp (with little success) the alligator clips onto their rods and getting a good angle with these is a little awkward. I'd suggest going for something a bit more robust/expensive. As for what that is - I don't know - I'm in the market for one myself.

    • While I also wouldn't necessarily recommend it, at $5 if you don't have anything else and can't be bothered finding something better then I say go for it. It gets the job done, much better than nothing.

  • Why it does say $6.58 rather than 5.99? Is there a code to apply or just simply they have bumped up the price?

    • GST?

  • yeah saw it at $6.58… i guess the sales over.

  • I'm heading down to pick mine up from Emporium at lunchtime. Maybe I needn't have switched to my large backpack…

  • I got one that looks virtually identical to this from DX.com

Be careful about leaving this out where sunlight can hit it, I have a massive burn on my sofa to show for it.

    • You can also use this in a similar way to zap ants on a sunny day. .

  • Picked mine up and was well worth the money. It is useful if you want one .
