OnePlus One Vs Refurb HTC One (M8) Vs Google Nexus 5/6 Vs ?

My wife needs a phone for Uni and work, which has a 720p screen or better (preferably 1920x1080) as she's regularly required to connect to remote desktop or do work that requires logging into Amazon's mTurk system and checking a load of checkboxes (sometimes 500+) to approve payments to end users. She needs a phone which is fairly snappy, and has had a Samsung Galaxy Nexus which is now failing to charge correctly, despite both battery and charging port being replaced. She's been working off a second-hand HTC Incredible S but finding it too slow, and the screen to small, while she's tried an iPhone 4S and doesn't like the UI or the screen size, or the speed.

On browsing the forums there seems to be a decent company for refurbed phones to Australian specs, but I can't find a link in any of the recent posts. Does anyone remember which it is?

Price:

My wife is a student and I'm disabled with a spinal cord injury. We've got a baby with fairly severe health problems, and we live in Sydney, the capital of expensive accommodation. Buying a new flagship phone would leave us unable to pay rent anytime soon, and we're already eating beans on toast for dinner and never go out! If we can keep it to $300AUD or less it would be incredible - half that would be even better (maybe a Google Nexus 4 if that's a decent suggestion, or a HTC One (M7) or even HTC One (original X/XL or gen 2)).

Caveats

I'm aware that newer firmware is better for usability, but makes older phones chug more. My wife's been struggling with the 'old android' feel of the Incredible S, while she liked my old HTC One XL (stopped connecting to the network) and loves her dead Samsung Galaxy Nexus. If she hadn't already filled up the space and turned it into a chugger, I'd probably have sought a new SGN, but the risk of buying new a phone that far out of support seems a little odd - one or more generations newer would seem to me to be a better cost/benefit equation. Is that right?

Also the OnePlus is expensive (by my standards) but fanastic value for money. I've been looking at US refurbs on ebay but not convinced they'll work on Australian 4G networks - we're currently with Optus via Vaya, but would consider a change to Boost for her.

Have you considered the LG G2? Should be under $300 online. As a former Nexus 5 owner I'd greatly have preferred the 3000mAh battery on that thing….

If you're strapped for cash and she was otherwise happy with a 4 year old Galaxy Nexus, I'd imagine the Moto G would be more than acceptable performance wise, but a G2 would be quite a spec bump for not much more…

Why not look at something like a Meizu M1 Note or Gionee Elife E7? From Oppomart they cost around $272 and $222 respectively, plus shipping. Both excellent phones, only disadvantage is Android 4.2.2 on the E7 and questionable software updates for both.

    • Both phones I'd looked at, but I'm fairly keen for a phone that'll run KitKat or Lollipop as the SGN got upgraded past 4.2.2 in the end and was lovely.

You scenario sounds exactly like mine!

Wife had an HTC Incredible S, cracked the screen, got the Galaxy Nexus, and now not charging (been swapping batteries for the last 7-8 months). It was getting slow and she kept on complaining GPS not working properly.

Last month I upgraded her to LG G2. Happy wife again :)

I wish making my wife happy was as easy as buying her a new phone

      • Not sure why you don't have lots of upvotes for this!

        • Obviously it's not just my wife that I can't keep happy

      • Tried shoes?

  • Lenovo vibe X2 from pandawill. (took a few weeks to arrive) ~$AUD 250. Its very fast, 5inch 1080p screen, 2gb ram. Fast: Has the only decent chinese processor -MTK6595 (my vellamo metal (single thread) score is 1730, and chrome score is 3298 (HTC one plus one=2934), 3g and 4g work on Vaya(probs works on others).

    Plus I like its looks.
My partner wants me to get her one too!

    • Htc one plus one? Wutttt…? Which app are you using to test the speed?

      • Vellamo 3.1 Is it a good benchmarking program? I've heard antutu is pretty useless.

  • HTC Butterfly S maybe a good choice but it is slightly above $300, you can get new on ebay for $325 delivered.

  • Might as well consider buying an Acer laptop from a recent deal for under $300 and getting some older phone (ask friends who have their previous models lying around) for calls and hotspot for the laptop. Cannot imagine using remote desktop on a phone for work, that would be a pain.

  • I'd also recommend the Asus Padfone S (see here http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/NEW-ASUS-Padfone-S-PF500KL-4G-LTEā€¦)
Dropped my sony phone in Thailand and screen went unresponsive, went to get this cheapish phone and quite happy with it. the Snapdragon 801 processor seems to work well too… $299 is a good price for a phone like this.

Just note that 3G isn't good for Voda & Telstra… but perfect for the Optus network. 4G is especially good for Telstra and Optus cause of the 700MHz.
I'm also going to sell mine that is near perfect condition as well, due to upgrading to the note 4, if you are in Sydney and interested you're always welcome to PM me… otherwise the eBay listing above is pretty cheap.
