Custom-Built Desktop 2015

Dear all,

My 7 yr old laptop is dragging now and I'd love a desktop that can do:
1, HD and 4k movie
2, Browsing and work tasks
3, Competent gaming (the like of GTA 5 and GTA 4 just casually)
4, Competent Photoshoping (hope to learn some graphic design )

My budget is 1000 for the whole set including a no-frills but quality Monitor (23" or so)
Willing to stretch up to 1500 if necessary
Hope it can last a bit long at least for everyday work, browsing, movie and medium graphic design

I am in Sydney CBD if that helps

Many thanks; any input is much appreciated

Mel

Use this guide, it is one of the best tools for building a computer. Keep in mind the prices are American, however, the levels of performance are still relevant.

Edit: You can change the country to Australia.

    • Thanks a lot and I will have a look. Cheers :)

take a look at this page
    http://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/rmp_sg_whirlpoolpcs_gaming_conf…
it has been my go to for the last 3 builds

    • A big shoutout and mind if I ask what were your last 3 builds and your feedback as to which one runs best as expected?

      • none on the current list havnt had the need for a new pc in the past 2 years, i went with a mix of the 800/1k build , i didnt need the gfx of the 1k build so i went with a cheaper case w/inc psu + a gfx card that was one step down from the 1 k build was like 850 at the time. its the same mobo tho !

The new Radeon GPU's will hit the market next month, according to Forbes.

AMD CEO Dr. Lisa Su has finally confirmed that yes, they will in fact launch new desktop graphics cards by the end of this quarter, meaning by the end of June 2015.

If you want to build a system, I would recommend omitting the graphics card first, then wait a month later to buy either the new release cards or an older card (at a cheaper price).

Internal graphics should be sufficient for most of what you do —- except for GTA gaming.

YOu might also be interested in this 16GB RAM kit from Newegg — it should save you some money.

    • Thanks heaps for the info.
Yeah then I will wait and see if pricing changes after that.

Do you think the 16GB RAM is cheap and quality and will fit most mother board? By that I mean I can buy the Kit now and save when I get other bits and pieces a couple months later.

There is speculation that RAM prices may fall. But that's only what RDX said, and also what other peeps think as DDR4 begins to increase in production and yield.

Here are the price trends for DDR3 memory. As you can see from the graphis, the prices are getting lower, but in the long run the prices will gradually reach a low point, and then start going back up again when supply of DDR3 memory becomes limited (will be quite some time before that happens though).
        https://pcpartpicker.com/trends/memory/#ram.240dimm.ddr3_160…

This generation of motherboards and the next generation of Skylake processors that are coming out will all use DDR3 1600mhz RAM as standard — you can buy higher memory speeds if you are interested in overclocking but it's best to see what kind of motherboard you are buying first.

        • Can you please kindly give me a heads-up when the speculation has turned true and if not?

I am puting the desktop on hold for 2 months and see.

          Thanks Scrimshaw :)

        • @melfes:

Ah, you can set up alerts in Ozbargain to receive an email whenever an item is posted on Ozbargain. Try typing "DDR3 RAM" or "Radeon" into the search box and clicking alerts. Use it to keep yourself notified of bargains concerning computer hardware.

        • @scrimshaw: Thanks dude, this is so handy!

        • ddr4 falling shouldnt be news

right now its only on x99

when it filters down to s1150 and its successor of course it will get cheaper

ddr3 will never get cheap as it once was
