  • This or Nitecore i4… hmmmm…

    • I bought a Nitecore D4 to replace the old version of this ALDI charger.
There is nothing wrong with the ALDI but the Nitecore would be the best charger I have see & used for NiCD, NiMH, Li/Ion.

Got the Nitecore D4 from Banggood for about $35

      http://www.banggood.com/NITECORE-Digicharger-D4-LCD-Display-…

      • Double the price though

      • most people only need nimh since it is for eneloops

  • +1

Not sure if it also charges non-professional batteries…

  • This charger VS the Sanyo charger that comes with eneloops? Opinions?

    • +1

ALDI is much better than the Sanyo.
Sanyo uses dT, the ALDI chargers use dV.
      Get a Nitecore D4 or I4 instead.

      • Where do you get them and how much?

      • i2 or 4 versions are not good for nimh (they do them but dont use -dv/dt). D2 or 4 is fine though as it does use -dv/dt.

      • price of Nitecore D4 or I4?

What is difference between dT and dV?
        and why should i care?

      • What's dT/dV?

        • +2

d is delta, t is temperature and v is voltage. It means it monitors voltage and temperature, and when one reaches a limit, it shuts off. ie: its smart and wont cook batteries.

        • @Tuba:

          But according to the post

it is either dv or dt (can't be both)
so which is better and why?

        • +2

          @tyler.durden:
No, its both. One means it detects voltage change and switches off when charged due to changes in the batterys voltage. The other detects rises in temperature, and switches off.

I think one catches it if the other misses, but its also a safety feature in that it will stop a half charged battery if too much heat is detected. DT measures something like rises of more than 1 degree C in a minute or some such time period. -DV I think, detects that the cell is charged as the battery naturally will drop a small amount of voltage when fully charged indicating its at capacity. But I aint Dick Smith so theres that to consider too…

My opinion, if you like the Nitecore just buy the D2 or D4 (can be bought for around the $20-30USD mark), and not the I2 or I4… or dont. Theyre reasonably priced, multi chemistry and smart featured. XTAR VC4 is another good choice, but not the VC2 as it doesnt do nimh. Opus BC3100 in v2.1 on, not earlier versions, theres a 3400 which is the same as the 2.1 but marketed as the 3400 for a specific shop that requested it.

Or theres this Aldi one, but I cant comment on its reliability or quality.

  • +4

Great commentary. I'm handing out + votes like they're VB tinnies at an ACDC concert.

  • Probably designed to recharge there Active Energy brand rechargeable batteries. I suppose they also work with other brands of rechargeable batteries.

Not sure if using a fast charger like this will reduce the lifespan of Eneloops.

I'm currently using this older Aldi Active Energy one from a few years back. Its labeled as a High Speed Intelligent Module Charger

  • +1

love the comments more than the deal :))

just bought this accupower yesterday and delieved within 24hrs

    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/AccuPower-IQ328-4-Bay-Smart-Charg…

    could be a good alternative.

  • What would you use if you were a prat? .. :-) .. !!

  • Gerry Harvey gives two thumbs up for this Professional charger!

  • I have a Nitecore i4 v2 charger. How does this go against it. I read the earlier comments and this item looks pretty good. Not too sure.

    • +1

Your nitecore will charge li-ions, this does not. If you bought the Nitecore you probably bought it to charge 18650's right? This Aldi won't do.

      • And yeah you're correct. Thanks a bunch.

      • Dammit I wish I'd noticed this before buying it. I needed a better charger for charging 18650s specifically for my headtorch!

        Gonna have to return it…

  • +2

If it's anything like the charger I bought from Aldi a year or two back then forget it. The one they were flogging at the time was branded "Activ Energy" and said to be an "intelligent fast charger" however it caused some batteries to become extremely hot when charging and with others it gave "Bad" LED reading. Those same batteries then charged normally with my Jay-tech charger.

Like most others I was taken in by the price and overlooking the lousy reputation Aldi have when it comes to anything electronic.

    • This is a new model which hasn't been on sale before at Aldi, hopefully it's a good one.
If not I will be returning it before the 60 days return policy expires.

    • Is this the one from last time? https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/151708

  • can you stack the AA to charge 2 at a time?

    • +1

You can charge 6 at a time apparently.

  • aldi technology gadget is hit and miss, but for $15 it worth a shot.

  • "As a Professional when I want my batteries charged professionally…"

What er … professional level of proficiency or … profession … are you requiring this additional … "professional" level of battery recharging for? I mean most pros I know aren't reaching for Eneloops for their pro level work.

    But nice deal anyhow :D

  • So is this a smart charger, fast charger, or dumb charger?

How long would it take to charge eneloops AA, AAA (1 and 2 batteries)?

  • If you wait a bit you can normally get these on clearance. The previous model was about $7 at my local store. Didn't end up getting as I already had one of the older models.

    • +1

      clearance are hit and miss..

sometimes they just take them out entirely
      without clearance..

else people would just wait for clearance.

  • It doesnt take that bigger than AA battery that a lot of those Asian cree torches take

    • No, it wont charge li ion.

    • It's not really an AA, and I think what you refer to is what's know as 18650 Li Ion as the other response mentions

  • How many AA or AAA it can charge at a time? Looks like just one AA and two AAA??

    • +1

      Can recharge up to 6x AA/AAA at a time (and 2x 9V too). Can charge 4x C/D.

  • Does anyone know how long that price is for?

    • +1

Until they run out of stock.

  • +7

Ok I now have one, it feels well constructed with nice quality plastic that doesn't creek or move at all. It has a good size lcd screen that dispays the 6 charging compartments battery percentage plus the two 9V slots.
    It will simultaneously charge 1 to 6 - AA/AAA. 1 to 4 - C/D & 1 to 2 - 9V.

The device will carry out a test of the batteries before starting the actual charging process. In order to preserve the batteries, the device initially starts with the precharging/regeneration of the batteries.
Your batteries will firstly be discharged & then recharged. 9V can't be discharged with this device.

The control is Minus Delta U - which means at the end of charging the slight fall in the level of voltage is detected & the charge is ended.
The charging time is controlled separately for each battery.
    Approx Charging Times - AAA 300-850mAh 0.9 - 2.5hrs. AA 800-2000mAh 1 - 3.5hrs. C 1800 - 4000mAh 2.5 - 5.5hrs. D 1800 - 4000mAh 2.5 - 6hrs. 9V 100 - 200mAh 2 - 5hrs.

Cheers. Just grabbed one with a pack of aldi lsd AA.

      • I saw their LSD's too and thought they were amazingly good value (does about $5 for 4xAA or AAA sound right?). Anyone know whether they are any good?

        • They are $6.99 4 pack, yes they work fine, made in China like most Eneloops just not as pretty.

        • @luke73:

          They were 5.99 today :)

        • @luke73:

          $14 for 8..

So around the price of eneloops..

I rather get eneloops even though they are not as good as japan made ones..

        • I agree. If you can wait for the 8 pack of Eneloops to go on sale @$14.95 pick up or free delivery, but if you are desperate, the Aldi lsd's are a good option.

        • @luke73:

they're on right now using the ebay code :)

        • Great, I can't find it. Got a link please?

        • @luke73:

hmm damn the Tropical is out of stock when choosing C&C unfortunately (sorry didn't check before). however the Rouge and Combi Pack (4xAA + 4xAAA) are available for C&C, $17.77 and $18.02 though (CPICKUP15 code)

    • Thanks for all the information. Just grabbed one from the Chapel's Street Aldi at South Yarra.

    • Posted my reply without seeing your more detailed reply @luke73.

Regarding the discharging, I suspect this is only done for those batteries with suitable chemistry, as it new to skip that for my Varta LSD's.

    • Thanks to your detailed review, I went and got one. Now that i am armed with a professional charger, I am going to collect a lot more eneloops.

      • Like a pro …

  • +1

Bought this charger today (have also ordered the Nitecore). Seems like a pretty decent charger, a BARGAIN at this price provided it lasts. Certainly better than the eneloop 'overnight' charger constantly the subject of posts on OB for more $. LED charging state indicators, and individual % charge indicators on LCD as well. Only comment would be to have a cloth to cover or pack away when not in use as it is otherwise open.

  • Got one, done some basic testing… so far so good considering the price.

The only issue I am experiencing: some of my Eneloops which were flat dead cannot be revive using the Aldi Charger. I left them for 15+ mins in the charger, they either stayed at 0% (and charging) or produced Error (Red LED Flashing). However if I charge them using my Eneloop Quick charger for 5 minutes and then put back to Aldi charger, then they show some sign of life (20%/30% + charging)…

    • And as you probably know, that's not uncommon with smart chargers, so no fault of the Bauhn unit. However using the simple (non-smart, or timer-based) Eneloop chargers will reduce the life of the battery.

      • but those charger was made by eneloop..

      • He said Eneloop quick charger, not the dumb charger. The Eneloop QUICK chargers are all smart AFAIK. All the overnight Eneloop chargers are dumb.

    • Nearly bought a Varta charge that cost double the price of this few weeks earlier, glad I didnt after checking OZB as most post seems to recommend Nitecore or LaCrosse.

Very happy with the $15 Aldi charger. To be fair for the charger, there are no mention of Professional on the box its just Universal Battery Charger.

Some older batteries was not charging (dead flat) but after putting and removing it for a few time it start charging. Full charge, then remove and later recharge it again.

      • Look on the back of the charger, it says Professional Battery Charger.

        • lol… I didnt notice that.

  • So is this charger as good as other more expensive ones mention on this thread?

  • Between this Aldi one, Nitecore and LaCrosse, how would you rank their pro-ness (i.e. battery quality management) and versatility (i.e. different battery chemistry)?

Still very confused after reading all previous posts

    • +1

The Aldi can do 6xAA/AAA our 4xC/D, and 2x 9V; each individually charged and monitored. I'm not convinced yet of it's charge detection (some cells not fully charged?) but it's possible it was on old cells or that other chargers don't also hiccup from time to time.

My No record only does 4x AA/WAS plus some of the enthusiast types like 18650 and new chemistries.

I bought both and am glad I did. If you missed out on the Aldi, you missed out on a bargain but it's not the end of the world.

      • Thanks. So in short Aldi's as good as Nitecore and LaCrosse, just doesn't do lithiums eg 18650, and discharge 9v. Right?

What about between Nitecore and LaCrosse? Which one is better?

        • Nitecore and LaCrosse probably have features the Aldi lacks, although the Aldi seems to do a decent job of charging. I'll let others describe the benefits of Nitecore and LaCrosse, as I'm not so familiar.

Picked up this charger last week and have just been power charging all my old batteries.

They are all NiMH batteries, and when I put them in have varying levels of charge according to the LCD. I put them all in and jack up to 100%.
Then some of them I put in the next day just to test and the LCD says they have anywhere from 20-90% battery.
Some also, pulling straight out of the charger at 100% and into a torch, give a pretty dull light, not looking like a decent charge.

Is the verdict that this is a case of poor quality / old batteries? Some of them are only a couple of years old and are Varta and the Aldi ones. Others are dodgy HK ebay ones that are pretty old.

Not sure if I should just take the thing back or if it's the batteries and I should invest in these so called 'Any Loops'

    • I wouldn't trust those readings. They seem only a rough guide.

2 days ago I charged all my batteries - eneloops & ordinary NiMH.

Just checked batteries with analog battery meter after reading your post. A NiMH AAA showed fully charged on meter, but 0% on charger. All eneloops showed 70% charge, but 100% after 1-2 minutes.

Unit won't charge fully discharged batteries.

      Will keep testing.

      • Weird. Thanks for the info. I wonder how the charger gets its readings such that it can read 0% on a full battery.

I have had a couple of batteries that come up with error on the charger. I put the batteries in my normal old charger for a few minutes then they charge fine in the Aldi one.

I've also found that some batteries are charging really fast to 100% and then don't seem to be giving what should be 100% power when put in something (have tried a torch and small toy RC car).

        • Yes, if the battery is too discharged (or maybe is old), a few minutes on another charger will solve that.

But I had charged one older NiMH battery to 100% 2 days ago & it's now too flat to be charged. It hasn't even been used. I regularly use that battery in a LED torch & have had no problems up until this charger. I have been using a 2+year old Aldi charger.

Another shows 0% but is as bright as always in the led torch.
The NiMH battery in the other led torch, which produces a blinding light, shows as 0% for last 10 minutes :-(

New AAA & AA Eneloops charged 2 days ago now show 30-40%¡ That just doesn't happen with eneloops!!

AAA Eneloops powerful enough to operate a hair trimmer won't charge on this charger - showing flashing error. Those were last charged over a month ago, but show full charge on ordinary battery meter.

Something seems fishy about these chargers.

Given how flaky Aldi electronics can be, I bought 2 of these chargers, to keep the better one. They indicate slightly differently with same battery.

Have tagged the charger as suspect. Luckily plenty of time to return under 60 day policy.

          Not very Professional, Aldi :-(

        • @brucefromaustralia:
Several new or barely used Eneloops failed to get beyond 90% after over 12 hours charging (red light still on after night of charging). This occasional fault was found many times during testing on both chargers - but not for the same battery in both chargers!!

          FAILED :-(
          Back to Aldi.

        • @brucefromaustralia:

Weird! So neither charger (both the new Aldi ones) could consistently charge batteries properly. And one battery may charge in one charge but not the other?

        • @brucefromaustralia: Can I ask also if the eneloops that are showing 30-40% after a couple of days are showing that in a battery tester or when put back in the charger?

I'm finding that the %age shown on the Aldi charger isn't really relevant but that I'm having some luck charging my newer nimh batteries. The older ones just aren't doing well, at least not in high demand applications like digital cameras.

        • @Greenspoon:
Eneloops reached 90% & remained at that for over 9 hours. That was not due to the battery, as happened sometimes on both chargers with different batteries.

So the charger failed to detect end state of charging!
That is a more serious issue. Display is simply inaccurate but won't harm batteries.

Testing with basic meter type battery tester showed fully charged.

Older NIMH did not hold charge like on old Aldi & other chargers.

Batteries do not seem to change temperature at all during charging. As it is a chemical reaction, it is strange there is no slight observed change.
