Virgin Card $99 Annual Fee inc 4 Free Flights Per Year (False Advertising by Fairfax? Bait Switch?)

I was browsing smh.com.au and I found the following ad in their internal link/ad section (by internal I mean links to "RSVP", "InvestSmart", "ExecutiveStyle" etc), i.e. it is one of their own ads:

As you can see it has a picture of a Virgin card and reads "4 FREE flights each year. Annual fee only $99"

which links to the following WA Today "Money" site comparing various credit cards:

But of the course the card isn't there because it's too good to be true. Or does it exist??

  • The price comparison is actually provided by Mozo rather than Fairfax. I guess some partnership between the 2. Mozo is a comparison website and probably gets commission from Virgin. Here's the detail on the free flight promotion when I googled around.

    • Nice work Scotty. So the card exists but doesn't provide 4 free flights per year as advertised. It kinda gets close in a roundabout way, but fails since you have to pay taxes and fees.

"This Exclusive reduced flights8 offer provides 50% off the base fare component of a domestic Virgin Australia Saver Fare (which excludes taxes, Booking and Service fees) for the Primary Cardholder and a friend when flying together on the same booking."

I used to have this card… I hardly ever found the 2for1 deal good value.

For starters, you can't buy the cheapest fare, as your first fare, usually the one up from it. Free ticket only available if sale ticket is still available. By the time you pay airport taxes for both fares, you might as well have bought two sale fares instead. At least you get all the velocity points for both tickets.
