Claim TRS on Costco Purchase

Hi guys, I need some clarification on claiming TRS using a Costco receipt. My mum has Costco membership. She wants to buy ~$300 worth of goods for her friend visiting in Australia. The receipt will have my mum's name at the bottom, would TRS match that name with name on passport to claim GST? The receipt total wouldn't exceed $1000.

Has anyone being in this situation? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

  • Why don't you cut off the bit that has the name?

  • I think you only need the name and address if it's 1000+. For 300-1000, a valid tax invoice will do.

  • If you really want to play it safe why doesn't your mums friend join Costco, buy the goods then cancel her membership (full refund).

    • Do this or cut off name. Costco receipt shows the name of the member on receipt.

You can use an iPhone/android app to claim at the airport - they just scan the qr code generated by app and may ask for receipt + goods for evidence.

  • would TRS match that name with name on passport to claim GST?

No. Your mum's friend will simply show TRS the Costco receipt(s) for at least $300 and all the items to claim the refund.

The name on the receipt isn't relevant.

    • Depends with the custom officer, i was got a $400 invoice with my wife's name and they refuse to refund to me.
I had to call my wife at the gate to go back!

  • Thank you everyone for your answers.

  • I can't recall if there was a name on the tax invoice, but I can confirm that I've used someone else's Costco Membership to purchase $500 worth of goods and had no issues claiming TRS at the airport.
