Help with going around Australia from Perth

I'm a 21 year old who was recently encouraged to move out of home. Instead I've decided to move out of Perth and see some of Australia while I'm at it!
I plan to stay in each capital city for a month or two working as I go, starting with Adelaide.

So my question is, what are some must do things along the way? And this being Ozbargain, how can I make this cheaper? Should I buy a car and drive over? Catch a plane? Hitchhike? I'm open to all suggestions and advice :)

I'd look up resources for backpackers, many have done the same thing! Good luck :)

      Thank you :)
I guess it's pretty much backpacking

Yeah lots of people come on working holiday visas, so need temp work and cheap ways to travel.

If you don't mind working on farms, you should be right..

I'll be up for any work, including farm work. Basically whoever will employ me

There was a website talked about here where you drive caravan back to places for rental company's. You can try that

    • Thanks for reminding me about that! I'll have a look around.

  • What sort of job skills do you have? Done anything in hospitality?

    • I've done work in a pizza restaurant, and done promotional work so I'm comfortable around people, but have no history in hospitality.

Planing to get my Responsible Service of Alcohol and senior first aid before going as well.

I'd like to suggest travel in a Mitz Express or other small van. Bed in back, sink, fridge and fuel cost same as car. Stay in bush at times, or caravan parks for work times. You'll save zillions on accomodation, and can go where and when you like.
A lot of plusses, but may not suit a lot of people.

    What to see:
    Flinders Ranges
Mount Barker volcano crater lakes (bring kayak)
Vic, NSW, QLD coastlines - everywhere.
Queensland Gulf country, particularly around Karumba, Normanton coast.
    Darwins great
    Frankly everywhere man…

Not top billing due to distances mainly - Alice or Uluru.

    • Thanks for the recommendations. I'll be sure to drop by those places, crater lake sounds especially good!

If you end up hitch hiking make a sign that says the direction you're heading (e.g. north).

    Otherwise just buy a car.

    For free accommodation try couchsurfing.com
Read some blog articles about it first. It's not merely about a free place to sleep. It's more about meeting locals and getting to know different people.

For an easy meal wherever you are take some wraps and tins of tuna. The wraps keep for ages and don't get squashed. Noheating or cooking or utensils required.

    • Thank you for the advice! Couchsurfing.com sounds great, part of this trip is for meeting new people, and I think I'll be interesting enough for a night or two :)

Tuna wraps are a great idea. I was originally going to stick to a baked beans diet but variety is good!

I ended up buying a Commodore Station wagon since it's cheap, common parts, has a decent amount of space and worst case I can sleep in the back! I can pick up hitch hikers along the way now as well. Also having a car will probably be a real convenience in the city. I leave tomorrow!

    Thanks again Ozbargainers

  • Keep us updated with your travels, Michael!

    • Hahaha, ok :)

Went down to the Stirling ranges this weekend. Climbed up Bulff Knoll and hung my head over the edge until I felt like I was falling. Climbed up Three Peaks today and now my legs feel like jelly. Oddly enough I met some people at the top and we had lunch together with our legs dangling off the edge of the cliff.

Seeing how unfit I am, I've decided to climb up every major mountain on my way east! Perhaps I should print out an OzBargain flag to plan at the top of each one?
