C.H.I.P. is a computer. It’s tiny and easy to use.

C.H.I.P. does computer things. Work in LibreOffice and save your documents to C.H.I.P.’s onboard storage. Surf the web and check your email over wifi. Play games with a bluetooth controller. With dozens of applications and tools preinstalled, C.H.I.P. is ready to do computer things the moment you power it on.

C.H.I.P. is a computer for students, teachers, grandparents, children, artists, makers, hackers, and inventors. Everyone really. C.H.I.P. is a great way to add a computer to your life and the perfect way to power your computer based projects.

As you can probably guess, this CHIP is a pretty low-end device— it's packing a 1GHz Allwinner A13 processor, 512MB of RAM and 4GB of internal flash storage, which compared to the latest Raspberry Pi sounds a little weak, but it is only going for $9 USD (that's not including shipping), as well as having built in Bluetooth 4.0 and Wireless (so no extra networking dongles required).

The higher tiers will include a LiPo battery, resistive 4.3 inch touch display, injection moulded shell and a clicky QWERTY keyboard, allowing you to make a portable device.

Looks pretty neat.

  • looks cool but what operating system can it run?

    nevermind i read down further.

  • This sounds like it would be fun. I wonder if it can really deliver on all its claims.

  • $20 shipping to Australia so $29 if you choose the lowest tier. I think I'll wait until they are mass produced and shipped, and cheap as, er, chips.

  • just buy a raspberry pi, more features, better support, marginal cost once you factor in everything else.

    • But you could put this in many more places at this price point.

      • Sure, if you need 10 devices. I have 3 pis and 2 collect dust.

  • don't similar devices already exist?

Good discussions on Hacker News: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=9513850

Cannot figure out how they can cut the cost below $9 — more like selling the board cheap and make profits on accessories.

  • Good find, sounds interesting!

Would Love to back this but the postage really kills it :(

  • Not so cheap anymore if adding battery or HDMI adaptor… in that case yeah raspberry pi is probably cheaper to get.

    • There are places I could deploy a headless wireless keyboardless computer. Not everybody wants to watch videos; there is only so much eye attention available.

  • $24 with hdmi adapter

    just get the Pi2?

its quad 1gb and has hdmi built in?

    a13 is single core

    does it have SD support

$9 sounds interesting until you find out you cant connect it to much without doubling or trippling the price

"The CHIP Is a fictional $9 Computer That doesn't exist and Can Almost Do Nothing At All"

    lol

    edit in that forum

    • Not fictional anymore, Tony :)
