NOTE: Unlike other companies that do canvas Big W Photo's canvas is already stretched on a wooden frame and ready to hang. Also this is included in above prices. Thanks to user MarbleI for this.

I have done a fair bit with Big W so I have a few tips:

FOR CANVAS
1. Crop your photo's before hand - but don't crop too much. Have to allow for the canvas to be folded around the wooden frame.
2. Only Upload High Resolution pictures - don't bother with Medium or Low res.
3. I think you get a choice of Matt or Gloss finish - I chose Mat and it still seems a bit glossy to me.

FOR PHOTOBOOKS
1. Crop you photo's using a photo editor - much easier than online. Be brutal with your cropping!
2. Automatic Sort Order is either by File Name or Photo Date so if your photo's are way off this order
I'd recommend renaming your photos before uploading to a sort order you are happy with.
You can change it of course…. It's just much easier if you don't have to change it much.
3. Upload Medium Quality only for photo-books
4. Take time to customize your album - you can get a great "coffee table book" finish if you put in the time.

Enjoy

P.S. Once you join up, Big W Photo's email you their latest promotions (about 1 a week)… So as photobooks take time…. it's not a bad idea if you create your photo-book first and then just wait till that particular size book is on special. Most common special I've noticed is 8"x8" soft cover at about $10 to $12 if you are anxious, but hold out for the hard cover specials if you can.

  • i have done the canvas and photobook at Big W before and they turned out great

  • LOL… was checking my own listing and "ads by google" had 70% Off Canvas with this link:
    http://www.canvasprintingonline.com.au/index.php?cPath=34&pa…

    To compare 1"=2.54cm e.g. 12"x12" = 30cmx30cm

    Can anyone recommend these guys?
Can't find any details about delivery costs either.

Oh and one final tip for Big W - Call them when they should be ready - They aren't that prompt in calling you.

    • Odd, NOD32 antivirus is detecting a html virus on this site "www.canvasprintingonline.com.au" Can anyone else confirm?

  • +1

    Hey Dobs,

    Nice deal and good description!

I've bought 4 of these canvases in the past when they have been on special. (20''x40'' and 20''x30'') I think they are pretty good quality and a great bargain 'cos they come pre-streched on a wooden frame ready to hang.

I reckon they make the pictures seem a bit darker compared to what you see on your computer monitor

    • Thanks Marblel and some good tips of your own.

I haven't personally noticed much difference between computer monitor and finished product but then again I have the brightness on my monitor turned down so it may well be true.
      Cheers

  • canvas factory do very good prices as well. when BigW is on sale then BigW sometimes is slightly cheaper. We have massive canvas done by Canvas Factory and 12x18 & 12x12 done by BigW at home.
BigW's 20x30 Poster printer at $43 is also very nice. Got 3 done, and have 1 more coming.
    Tips:
Poster Print needs 200 or 300 dpi. So 20"x30" would need 6000x9000 jpg file. BigW (fujicolor) seems to accept files no bigger than 14 MB at the moment. I scan original (clean flatbed scanner to get rid of dust first) at a high dpi using photoshop to "fill" the enlargement. When saving as JPG I save anywhere from 3 to 9 out of 12 (Photoshop JPG compression). The prints comes out very nicely.
Canvas prints only need around 150 dpi. Hope this helps.

  • good prices, have gone ahead and ordered a large canvas from bigw on a 40% off sale, but had to return it twice as the quality was so bad with orange splotches all over it. Even the photo girl at Big W was astounded. A bit annoying having to call Fuji (who big w go through) twice and arrange new ones. Ended up getting a refund.
