Outright phone bought from JB Hi-Fi and it's Telstra branded

So my Sony Z died recently (on a plan through Telstra) and I decided that I would purchase a new Sony Z3 Compact from JBHiFi to replace it. This phone was an outright purchase on the basis that it wasn't locked to a carrier and had no branding because after dealing with all the delayed firmware/software releases through Telstra, I wanted something completely stock.

I picked up the phone, went home turned it on and saw the Telstra logo. I was 100% pure emotional. This defeats the core reasoning behind the purchase.

On calling the store, I was informed that they do not stock unlocked and unbranded Sony Z3 compact mobile phones and that the person who sold it to me should have informed me that it was a phone "manufactured for Telstra". This person also mention that they do not return outright phones. I explained that I bought this phone on the premise that it was unbranded and unlocked, "outright". The issue was apparently being escalated and they were going to check whether Telstra delays the firmware/software.

I know the process with the updates and it looks like I'm going to be stuck again. Their website does not indicate that it is Telstra Branded. It's been two days since I contacted them. I have since found out that it may only be the Sony Store that sells handsets that are stock. If I knew it was going to be a Telstra handset I would have just gone on another plan. BTW I don't have any issues with Telstra doing what they do, I just wanted to avoid the delays, bloat SW etc.

Would love to hear some feedback.

Return it. They have no right under consumer law to say they don't accept returns. See here if you need some info to back you up when you get into the inevitable argument with the store manager: http://www.consumerlaw.gov.au/content/Content.aspx?doc=consu…

Just take it back or if worst comes to the worst chuck it on eBay as unlocked but telstra branded.

    Take it back in person

  • Would buying the phone from JBhifi be cheaper than purchasing from a Sony store?

    • Yes, Telstra store phones are usually cheaper, and with JB Hifi it's possible to further lower the price through haggling or discounted gift cards.

  • I was informed that they do not stock unlocked and unbranded Sony Z3 compact mobile phones

This is incorrect, they are unlocked although they are branded.

Having said that though, I believe Telstra Xperia Z3 has the Lollipop update already, so unless that's not true I don't see the problem.

    • but any future updates will either not arrive or be months and months delayed.

      • That's true, but I personally wouldn't want the Lollipop update for now anyway, buggy as. In fact I'm staying on Kit Kit on my Z2 because of those bugs.

Can you flash an unbranded Telstra Rom to the device?

    • That's what I did with my Z2

I've just called them to see where its at. It's with the manager/head office at the moment I believe. Sales guy is being really good with the issue and i'm expecting a call tomorrow as one of the relevant people aren't there today.

Phone will be cheaper at jb then sony store for sure.

A friend had the Sony Z at the same time I had mine. Every time an update was released, he would get it a lot earlier than I would. Things like this can get frustrating if your waiting for things such as battery life/stability fixes.

Might be able to flash it, although the point is that I shouldn't have to.

Sales guy (original one) said that it is my right to return it, so at least he is admitting it. (thanks ScroogeMcChicken )

  • I think outright means it is unlocked and does not need to be bound by a mobile plan, unless stated otherwise that it is unbranded.

    • If your not buying a phone "outright", then how are you buying the phone? Sounds like definition of outright can be taken multiple ways.

The common practice is if not outright, you need to sign up for a 1yr or 2 year plan with a telco. I guess outright means any phone that you buy that does not need you to sign up for a fixed term commitment. Some grey seller like Kogan or Uniques Mobiles usually says it is unlocked and unbranded, if it is branded, they will tell you.
